" Can you stop stealing our baby's chocolate? " I complained as I watched Theon grab another chocolate from the box of chocolates we had bought on the way to Vail.
Today we had another ultrasound appointment, and I was already seventeen weeks pregnant and hoped that we would be able to find out the sex on this scan.
" I think this baby has had enough chocolate," Theon scoffed, popping the candy into his mouth.
" Quiet," I murmured, "your grandmother said that I have to eat well.”
" She means healthy foods, Sam," he picked up another candy, much to my displeasure.
"Don't you want to find out if it's a boy or a girl today? Then give the chocolate to the baby," he removed the candy wrapper.
" You are taking advantage of the situation," he put the candy in my mouth.
A lady in her sixties was watching us with a small smile on her face.
"How long have you been married? " she finally asked, drawing our attention.
" We're not together," Theon seemed uncomfortable with the subject.
" Yes, he has a girlfriend," I added.
Not that we needed to give any kind of explanation to a stranger, but it seemed appropriate to clarify.
" But then…”
" We are friends and we will have a baby together, that's all," I continued, to the woman's astonishment.
" You're going to raise the baby all by yourself? " she sighed ruefully.
What part of "we will have a baby together" didn't she understand?
" No, I'm going to raise our child with her," Theon replied with a bit of an uncharacteristic sneer.
Looks like I'm not the only one who gets irritated by this subject.
" Oh…”
She shut up next, but still, our moment was ruined. I moved around on the couch, looking for a comfortable position while hoping that Dr. Olsen would call us soon. I still hadn't forgotten my last experience in this waiting room.
" Was the pregnancy an accident? " she questioned again, irritating me even more.
I begin to agree with Delphine when she pretends not to speak our language to get away from talking to strangers!
" Yes, I tripped on the stairs and fell down sitting on his cock," I pointed out, looking into the woman's scandalized eyes.
Theon gave me a surprised look, while she stood up and walked away immediately.
Good, maybe she'll learn to take care of her own life.
We were called away next, to my relief.
" Can you believe that woman? She's still looking at me like I'm the crazy one! " I muttered to Theon who was leading me to the doctor's office.
" Forget about that, we have another priority now," he sighed.
" My priority should be hit her head against the wall," I continued, walking into the room.
" Sam, being angry is only bad for the baby, forget about it," Theon pleaded, receiving a surprised look from the doctor.
" Is there a problem? " he asked, as we settled into the available chairs.
" I have no luck in this waiting room," I murmured, "but it was no big deal this time.”
The doctor looked at us for a moment, before shrugging.
" I told you on our last visit, you shouldn't take everything you hear seriously. How have you been the last few days, Sam?”
" I'm fine," I assured him, "I hardly feel nauseous at all anymore, and I've been in a better mood.”
" It is natural that with the end of the first trimester you begin to feel better " he assured me " Have you been taking your vitamins?”
" Yes, all of them," I confirmed as he wrote down everything I Said.
Theon didn't speak up, content to watch.
" Well, you can change in the bathroom. The exam we're going to do today will be a little different, because I need to measure your cervix," he explained, "you can put on your apron and lie down on the gurney.”
I did as he recommended, feeling completely exposed wearing only that apron in front of Theon, but I tried to act natural as I lay down with the help of the father of my son.
" Is everything all right? " he murmured as the doctor prepared the equipment for the ultrasound.
" Yes," I forced a smile.
The nurse approached, exposing my belly and much of my body. He looked away, looking uncomfortable as I tried to avoid showing more than was necessary. I wasn't even wearing panties!
" Ahh, I... " he stammered, trying to focus his gaze elsewhere as I felt my face heat up.
" Here he is," the doctor drew our attention to the monitor of the machine, where our baby was imprinted.
He was moving as frantically as last time, making me forget all my previous discomfort. My hand reached for Theon's, intertwining our fingers. As always, I was amazed at the perfection displayed there.
" Isn't he amazing? " I whispered to him.
" Yes," was his only reply before I brought my hands to his lips.
" Do you want to know the sex? "The doctor asked, "I can already see clearly what it is.”
" It's a boy, isn't it? " I moved around on the gurney trying to get a better look.
" Sam, calm down, it might be a girl," Theon smiled indulgently, stroking my hand.
" Of course I know, it's inside me that it's growing," I rolled my eyes, "and your grandmother agrees with me!”
" You're both right, it's a boy," the doctor confirmed with a smile on his face.
" I knew it! " I exclaimed excitedly.
" I'm going to do the transvaginal now, let's measure the cervix," Dr. Olsen commented, preparing the other ultrasound machine.
I glanced uncomfortably at the father of my son who was staring at the doctor in shock.
" What?”
" I need to measure the cervix, and for that, I need to do the transvaginal," he repeated.
" You mean you're going to put this inside her? " Theon blinked, stunned.
" Yes, but it's completely safe, don't worry.”
" Theon, I think I'd better…”
" I'll wait for you outside, Sam," he warned, walking to the door.
I watched him as he left the room, sighing with relief. It wasn't that he had never seen me without my clothes on, in fact, the fact that we were in this situation proves otherwise, but I had never felt more exposed than I did at this moment.
A few minutes later, I found him in the waiting room.
" Shall we go, Apollo? " I called his attention.
" Come on," he offered me a wan smile, before getting up.
We remained in a slightly awkward silence for the first few minutes of our return trip, sometimes I felt his gaze on me, but I preferred to focus on the landscape outside.
" So, it's a boy," he tried to break the silence, causing me to look at him for the first time, "you were right.”
" I usually am," I sneered, "were you happy?”
" Sam, I've been happy since I first saw him," he assured me, "it made no difference to me whether it was a boy or a girl, just that it was perfect, which he is!”
I turned my face away in an attempt to hide a small smile. I loved hearing him talk about our baby that way, I could feel his affection in every single word Theon spoke about him, and it made me think of Lara, and how lucky I was to have such a man as the father of my child.
" What was it? " he asked, still watching me.
" Nothing, just thinking how lucky I am to have everything perfect," I assured him with a smile.
