A Night With My CEO Chapter 57

I couldn't move when our eyes locked. It seemed as if the world had stopped spinning and there was a rope separating us so we weren't so close. I wouldn't have left where I was if the woman next to her hadn't talked and that woman is the one I'd never forget. I stood up and walked up to the four persons who, I believe, were looking at the applicants' abilities. I didn't hesitate to expose my data to Adams, but I appeared to be out of breath as our hands brushed.

If it had a major impact on me, it seems insignificant to him. I stepped backwards since I had known what was going on between the two of us for a long time has long gone. When a man on the far left spoke out, I was about to introduce myself. Adams is on the right side, close to Aria; the woman next to Aria is an elderly woman; perhaps they are both in the business. I focused my attention on him.

"Would you want to be my secretary?" he suggested, playing with his lips as if he was trying to hide a smile. I gave him a kind grin and answered his query. I recognize that type of gesture, and if his interest in me is the reason I will have a job, why not?

"If I'm qualified for the position, sir, I'm prepared to accept your offer—" Even though I hadn't finished what I was saying, someone abruptly cut me off. He hasn't let go of that habit to this day.

"Tayler, we'll hire someone based on their skills, not just how they look." In the year I haven't seen him, he has changed so much; his face is even more terrifying to look at, his voice has deepened, and his body and face look like the old Adams is no longer alive because his body has become more and more stone. He examined me from head to toe, and I cocked an eyebrow at him, wondering what he thought of me, slut? So, in response to his statement, I said what I was proud of.

"I got a degree in business management, I worked for a big company for a few years and was quickly promoted as a team leader, I think I'm what you need for your growing business," I didn't hesitate to tell them — to him — but just after I spoke, someone talked again who I knew was against my emerging here to the new company, and I believe she was on the board of directors.

"If you worked for the prestigious corporation you said, why did you leave?" Aria smirked at me, clearly intending to embarrass me, but be patient with her since I didn't enter the fight without ammo. Adams flinched at Aria's inquiry, and he even grabbed her hand to stop her.

Adams, you can't even control your girlfriend.

When I say the term "girlfriend," I feel a twinge of pain.

"It's probably not illegal to take personal difficulties, is it?" I arched an eyebrow at her since I know that even if I can't be welcomed here, there will be others who will accept me, the only problem being that they will treat me terribly. Aria clenched her teeth, and I could sense her irritation with me. I simply shrugged her reaction and grinned at what Adams had earlier referred to as Tayler.

"Is she all OK, Mom? Her previous experiences are impressive, and I believe she can assist me more because I am new to the industry and she is more educated about it."

I literally have no idea where I got the team leader idea. I just thought that during the last year, I had been promoted promptly when I left their firm and worked with others, and I didn't know what support I could provide this man.

“You are hired.”

When I heard what the old lady declared, I felt like jumping for excitement because the longer I rested from work, my bones would eventually extend as well. Even when I stopped smiling, the smiles in my eyes could not be obliterated. Tayler also grins at me, and I'm not sure why I see the Adams I first met in him. He appears cold on the exterior yet extremely warm on the inside.

My smile touched the skies as I thanked them and exited. It's the first time in a while that I've forgotten I had a problem. I don't care what Adams thinks of me anymore, even if it pains me that everything is so easy for him; perhaps, like Derek, I need to move on. I suppose I'm the last one remaining in our universe. We were both poisoned, but I was the only one who drank the poison meant for the two of us.

I was already outside, waiting for a cab, when someone suddenly drew me somewhere, and when I realized who it was, I couldn't move. I'm not sure what brought him here, because even though I work for his firm, I have no intentions to talk to him.

"You let me go, Adams," I said strongly, but all he did was gaze at me, and I couldn't explain the expression in his eyes.

His eyes were filled with guilt, but it was too late. Back then I waited for him to return and explain things to me that I didn't understand, but he didn't show up. He abandoned me, leaving me with no one to turn to except myself. I know every glance he gives me has a meaning, but I'm curious what else they're for.

When I noticed that he was ready to say anything, he abruptly stopped because of the man who had called me. It's Tayler. He was smiling as he approached us, which is why Adams let go of my hand.

"Hey Zoe, can I give you a ride?" Tayler's question made me glance at Adams as if his eyes were urging me not to come, but I didn't want to listen to him anymore so I answered Tayler.

"Sure."
