Melissa's POV
The hallway was so quiet that the only sound that could be heard were that of I and Conri who walked down heading to where I have no idea about.
"Where are we going?" I asked turning my attention to Conri who had his gazed forward.
"To the royal library"
Surprised, I narrowed my gaze at him, "The Royal library? But, how is that going to help me know things I ought to. There are tons of books given to me to go through but still, I can't understand it clearly. How sure are you that I am going to do justice to the ones you are about to show me now" I asked, my sight not leaving him.
A soft laugh escaped his lips, he took a left turn and I followed suit. The hallway we entered was way brighter than the former and I could clearly see two maids coming out of a room and heading out with their eyes bowed in respect.
"I am not just taking you there to read, but to explain more to you. Follow me" he gestured.
I rolled my eyes with a sigh, "Of course I am" I responded and followed suit, my gaze not leaving him.
Soon, he stood next to a very tall wooden door, dipped his hand into his pocket and brought out a bronze key.
"How were you able to get it?" I asked curiously.
"I possess one" Conri unlocked the door without looking at me.
"You do?"
"Yes"
"But…how come? Sorry, but you aren't part of the royal home and isn't this accessible to the royal family alone?"
Conri turned around and rested his gaze on me, his eyes watching me more deeper than it had ever done before, a smile on his face.
"You seem too inquisitive," he let out.
I felt a bit offended by his words and I didn't hide it from him.
"What do you mean Conri?"
He shook his head, looked away from me and together, we walked into the large room and my jaw dropped.
The room is twice as big as any room I have been in ever since my arrival. Each corner was filled with shelves and each shelf was stored in books, books of different kinds and I couldn't hold it, my eyes widened in Surprise.
Conri turned to me with a calm expression on his face, "Surprise?"
"Absolutely" I admitted.
"Well, this is the royal library, filled with books of all kinds, books passed on from generation to another, endowed with the knowledge each Alphas and Luna, even mere werewolves should. I brought you here so that you can see things for yourself, the books in here are more understandable and very self explanatory. But still, I will have to put you through, I know the certain type of book you need and I will provide it all to your service" he stretched forth both hands with a satisfied look on his face.
Very impressed, I couldn't help but nod in agreement, this is indeed impressive and quite the headache. Searching for a book here will be war but with Conri, I guess it won't be that hard for me.
A thought struck my head, I looked at Conri with a raised brow.
"Why that look?"
"You are yet to answer my question" I responded.
"What question?" Conri inquired, looking confused.
"How are you able to access this without you being a part of the royal home?" I asked, watching him closely.
Suddenly, Conri broke out Into a loud laughter making me really confused.
"Why are you laughing? What's funny?" I was very offended this time.
"I am sorry but your question is quite surprising," he replied.
"How? It's a normal question to ask. You are Anabelle's friend and not the Alpha's son, I am just curious to know how you have access to this without having the Alpha's blood running through your veins" I proceeded making him see that I was totally not happy with his mocking laughter.
"I am sorry if my laughter made you uncomfortable…" he walked towards a shelf, picked up a book with a brown leather cover and handed it to me, "I thought Anabelle must have informed you on who I really am"
"No she didn't" I shook my head wondering what part of him I might be missing, "Nothing else apart you being her friend"
Suddenly, Conri took to a halt, turned to me with a weird look on his face, "Are you serious?"
"Wait" I paused, giving him a look, "What were you expecting her to tell me?..." I paused, smiling, "Who are you then? Since Anabelle didn't inform me of your majesty being, I guess it's best I hear it from the horse's mouth" I said sarcastically, a smile plastered on my face.
"Are you trying to play words with me?" Conri laughed heartily.
"Maybe…" I shrug my shoulders watching him pick up another book which he handed to me.
Conri laughed, "Well, I won't say I am up to anything important, I am just the son of the Beta and the next Beta in line immediately your husband is made the Alpha" he announced calmly.
As confused as I was, I didn't say a word for a minute, words going through my head as I didn't understand what he meant.
"Beta? Who is a Beta?" I implored.
Conri sighed looking at me, "You will know about it all today" he walked towards a wooden chair, sat on it and looked up at me as I stood, my hands wrapped around the books he gave to me.
"Take a seat" he gestured pointing to an empty chair next to the one he sat on.
Carefully, I sat next to him, placed the books on the table close to us and averted my gaze at him.
"A Beta is a werewolf who is the second in command to the Alpha. In the Alpha's absence, he takes up the role of the alpha and performs all activities needed" Conri explained softly to my understanding.
"Oh" I muttered.
"Understand now?"
I didn't reply but nodded. This isn't something so hard that my human brain can't be able to process it faster.
"So you are Nelson Beta as soon as he is made Alpha?" I asked him.
"Yes…" Conri paused, "My duty as beta strikes as soon as he is made Alpha"
"But, won't that be odd, I guess your father is still alive"
Conri laughed softly, "Yes he is, but that isn't how it works here. A new Alpha needs a new Beta from the former Beta's lineage. With this, it is believe that the new Alpha and his Luna will be in good hands"
I paused, glanced at the book with the leader cover and placed my fingers running through it.
"Anabelle mentioned something about me becoming Luna…" I let out a loud sigh, my eyes still fixed on the book , "To be honest, I have lots of questions I need to ask, I need answers to them because everything seems so new to me…." I looked up at Conri this time, my eyes glued on him, "I am a human by nature and not a werewolf, how can I be a Luna without having such traits?....it sucks, doesn't it?" I asked, staring deeply into those eyes of his.
"Yeah, it does," Conri admitted, looking away from me and picking up the book with the brown leather cover. "But you can fix that if you want to," he said, raising the book up to my face.
Puzzled, my eyebrows furred as I stared at him, "Fix it? How? How do you expect me to grow a tail overnight?" I implored trying to imprison the fraustation that was about to take the best out of me.
"Come on Melissa, don't be too hard on yourself" Conri pointed out, "Here" he dropped the book in front of me.
"If you really want to know things, it is at your fingertips. Go through this book and when we get to see tomorrow, tell me all you think of it"
"But what if I don't understand a thing?" I countered, very confused.
"You will, I assure you this"
"I don't know" I shook my head, this time, my eyes not leaving the book.
"You have to Melissa, it won't be nice if as the next Luna, you don't know things like this. It is really going to flop you up and as soon as the current Alpha is dead, your coronation and that of your husband will take place and of course, it won't be nice if you don't end up trying your best and making the best out of it. Trust me on this, I won't lie to you and if Anabelle thinks of you as a weakling, she won't send me to help you" Conri affirmed , a serious expression glued to him harder than expected.
Speechless, I looked at the book in front of me, never in my life have I felt so left out and drawn in at the same time. It felt like I was drawing so deep into an ocean, an ocean wide enough to swallow me whole and grasp the last breath left in me.
The words written on the book stared right at me.
"The Chronicles Of The Fridolf pack" I muttered reading through the words as my fingers rubbed through the body written words on it.
"Alright, I will go through it and see what becomes of my knowledge, I just hope that I get the best from this" I said pointing at the book.
Conri Chuckled, "We still have a lot to learn Melissa. This isn't the only thing you need, you will have to go through more books but this is the foundation of it all…." He stood up dipping his hand into his pocket. "We have to leave now, we will continue same time tomorrow"
With a nod, I stood and together, we got out of the library, my fingers wrapped around the book.
Soon, I got into the chamber I shared with Nelson, ordered Patricia that I needed my privacy and after changing into a more comfortable dress, I laid on the bed and began to read through the first page. I was down on it, all I wanted was to know more and fill my knowledge with everything I needed to do.
I have gotten into this now and I feel that there is no going back for me. Whether I agree to this or not, in fact, I am already married to Nelson and right now, it's time to let my pains off my shoulders and know what I am supposed to be as the next Luna in line.
Hours passed by Swiftly without me noticing, soon the sunset, I was called for dinner but I requested to be served in the chamber. After dinner, I had my bath, laid on the bed and continued reading with the candle lit next to the bed. The boom had up to hundred pages and I was determined to have it finished up before the sunrise.
It was almost midnight, I heard the door open, looking up, I saw Nelson who walked into the room looking so rough. His hair was scattered into several directions, his first buttons of his shirt were undone showing a lot of his skin.
He didn't appear drunk nor did he look at me, instead, he walked towards the wardrobe and began to undress.
I turned away from him, my eyes fixed to the book which laid on my laps as I sat on the bed. We are more like strangers and not mates so it didn't seem like something new to me. Ignoring him completely, I focused my gaze on the book not caring what he might have done to look in such a mess.
Suddenly I heard footsteps next to me, I gazed up only to find Nelson staring at me with cold eyes. He walked to the side where I sat, his gaze fixed on the book and slowly returned it deep inside my eyes.
"What do you think you are doing?" He asked harshly, a look of hatred buried in his eyes.
