"How's Thor? How is he holding up?" Martha asks to my surprise.
I thought she would be angry at Thor for choosing another she-wolf over her daughter. And not just any she-wolf but Alpha Nate's daughter that Ash recently fought with... Okay, maybe she's not the kind of person that goes out of their way to show hate but still, I never expected her to care about Thor's well-being when it seemed like he broke her daughter's heart
"Thor is..." I hesitate. Considering whether to tell her the truth or lie to her. I don't know if she will understand if I tell her the truth or if she will judge Thor even though what happened isn't his fault. The fact that she looks and sounds like she cares doesn't mean she will understand the situation
"What happened? It's okay, you can tell me anything... I want to understand why he chose another woman over Ash despite showing he loved her. How he could make her happy one moment and break her heart the next... I just want to understand"
I nod "Don't be distraught if you see Thor and he appears blissful" I say and laugh dryly
"Blissful?... He is happy about this?" She asks in disbelief
"Yes. Ash is sad but Thor is happy. He's happy because he thinks he's currently with Ash. He called Nate's daughter, Ash. He had no idea how bad the real Ash is hurting because of him"
Her eyes widen with shock.
"He mistook Miranda for Ash? But did you try to explain the situation to him though? How did he take it? Did he still reject her even after you have explained it to him?"
"Don't get it wrong Martha, Thor never rejected Ash. He just doesn't recognize her as his mate anymore." I first corrected the wrong perspective she had of the situation.
"I know that. I just used the wrong word."
"Okay, and to your other question... No, we didn't explain the situation to him. Our seer said it might make him go crazy."
"Sorcery!..." She says with a faraway expression on her face. "There's a pattern. It doesn't seem the same but I can see it."
"What pattern? What doesn't seem the same?" I ask in confusion but she just keeps staring into space
"Martha!?" I sharply call her name, startling her awake from whatever she was thinking about
"What do you mean by 'there's a pattern?" I ask again
"It almost seems like what happened with the old Alpha. Alpha Knox"
"Thor's dad? But how?... It doesn't seem the same to me because Aunt Viveka was not his mate. He's mated to Evelyn."
"Is he truly?..." She ask me with a raised brow
"Well, according to our parents, Uncle Knox and Evelyn are mates. If you think otherwise then tell me. Explain to me, what I don't understand Martha, and stop beating around the bush!"
"I'm not beating around the bush, I'm just trying to understand this mess more... True, Alpha Knox and Viveka were not mated but they were so much in love with each other they could have been mates. I worked for them all through the years that they were together and I saw how much in love they were with each other.
He adored her. He practically worshipped the ground she walked on. I'm not a shifter and don't understand the ways of your Moon goddess but those two should have been mated because they had a very strong connection between them.
And then he met Evelyn and everything shot straight to hell. I was still working with Alpha Knox even after Viveka left. He was devastated. Worked all day and drank all night. I know a heartbroken man when I see one and Alpha Knox was heartbroken.
His mate should be able to make him happy right? Because there wasn't any difference even after Evelyn had moved into the Alpha's mansion as his mate and Luna. I mean wasn't he supposed to be attracted to his mate and be happy whenever he sees her?
Why did he love Viveka so much but couldn't even tolerate Evelyn? If they're mate then why was he miserable? He couldn't be with Viveka, who loved and made him happy, and yet couldn't be happy with Evelyn!...
No one knew how unhappy their union was but me. They fought a lot at home but put up a show and looked like a happy couple to the outside world. I don't understand– can you perhaps explain to me, what kind of a goddess takes away a man's happiness and replaces it with sorrow?"
She asks, looking intently at me but I don't have any answer for her. I'm not mated yet but I've seen the way Ivar and Ella behave around each other. I've seen how Thor who just met Ash talked non-stop about her and showed her pictures around to everyone who cares to see but I have never seen the sort of behavior that Martha just described between a mated couple
Martha must be saying the truth because I remember how Uncle Knox gave a disdainful snort and responded with sarcasm when Thor suggested his dad and his mate loved each other
"I don't understand. If he wasn't in love with Evelyn and couldn't be with Aunt Viveka anymore then why couldn't he love his own son? Thor was innocent but he treated him like shit. Thor didn't even get to meet his dad until when he was thirteen. He even had him expelled from school that same day they met for fighting with Justine
"I'm sorry but I'm not surprised about that. Did I tell you that even though Alpha Knox didn't love Evelyn, anything she wanted she still got? She just gave the command and it's done"
"Oh... Are you saying Uncle Knox was not aware of everything he did to Aunt Viveka and Thor? Are you suggesting sorcery was involved?"
"Do you have any other suggestions then?" She asks.
"No, what you said made perfect sense... Just that, that girl, what is her name again?... Alpha Nate's daughter?"
"Miranda..."
"Yeah, Miranda... I don't think she could have done this without her parents being aware... It's so sad that Uncle Knox thought Nate was a good friend. He even made this bastard Thor's seconds for the duel!" I say in annoyance.
"How could he do this to the son of the person he called friend? He wanted his daughter to be the Luna so badly, that he would do anything to achieve it. He doesn't care if Thor was miserable about it"
As I rant, Martha was shaking her head in disagreement. It's obvious she doesn't agree with what I say about Nate.
"Well, I don't know if Alpha Nate's Luna is involved in this but Alpha Nate can't be involved... I know him as I know Alpha Knox and will never believe that of him.
Maybe you should talk to Alpha Knox. Maybe he might be able to help Thor out of this bondage the way he helped himself out of Evelyn's bondage" She says and I nod in agreement
