Silk and Steel: Forbidden Desires Chapter 11

Bella lay in her bed, tears staining her pillow as she struggled to make sense of the emotional whirlwind that had consumed her. The shock of witnessing Reid with the mysterious brunette lady by the pool and realising her own feelings had left her feeling shattered, and the confusion in her heart was overwhelming.

As the minutes turned into hours, Bella's sobs eventually subsided, and she found herself drifting into a fitful sleep, her dreams haunted by the image of Reid with the other woman. She was restless, filled with tossing and turning as her mind grappled with the unsettling revelation.

In the midst of her troubled slumber, Bella was roused by a gentle knock on her bedroom door. She blinked away the remnants of sleep, and her mother's voice, filled with concern, reached her ears.

"Bella, dear, are you okay? It's time for dinner."

Bella, still feeling emotionally raw and fragile, hesitated for a moment before responding.

"I'm not feeling well, Mom. My...my menstrual cramps are still hurting. I think I should rest for now. I am not hungry."

Her mother, understanding the discomfort that Bella often experienced during her periods, nodded with sympathy.

"I'm sorry to hear that, sweetheart. You don’t look very well; I hope you took some painkillers. Take all the time you need. We'll save you a plate for later. If you need anything, just let us know."

With a gentle reassurance, her mother left the room, leaving Bella to wrestle with the complex tangle of emotions that had consumed her. While the excuse of menstrual cramps allowed her to avoid facing Reid at dinner, it did little to soothe the turmoil within her heart. The events of the evening had left her feeling vulnerable and confused, and she knew that, in time, she would need to confront the truths and emotions that had been stirred by that shocking encounter by the pool.

In the quiet solitude of her room, Bella found herself confronted with a tumultuous storm of emotions. The shocking encounter she had witnessed earlier by the pool had acted as a catalyst, revealing a truth she had been reluctant to acknowledge—she was in love with Reid, and her feelings ran deeper and stronger than a mere crush.

She lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling, as she began to dissect the emotions swirling within her. Her heartache and tears earlier in the day had been a wake-up call, a painful revelation that her connection with Reid was far more profound than she had ever admitted to herself.

For years, Bella had been content to label her infatuation as a crush, something that was fleeting and whimsical and she was constantly teased by Lily for it. But today's events had shattered that illusion, and she was forced to confront the truth of her emotions. She realized that what she felt for Reid was more than admiration for his charm and charisma—it was a deep, undeniable love that had taken root in her heart.

As she reflected on her feelings, Bella understood that her love for Reid was complicated by their circumstances. He was her father's best friend, for God’s sake, a successful and enigmatic man who was seemingly out of her reach, not mentioning the years difference between them. Probably he was seeing her as a spoiled brat, a child, and she winced at the thought. The implications of her emotions weighed heavily on her young shoulders, leaving her feeling vulnerable and uncertain about the path ahead.

As night settled on the island she had no appetite for eating. The turmoil of the day, the shock of what she had witnessed by the pool, and the emotional rollercoaster of her feelings for Reid had left her too preoccupied to think about food.

Instead of joining her family at the dinner table, Bella decided to spend the evening alone in her room. Her hunger was eclipsed by a restless energy that had taken hold of her, making her unable to find solace in sleep.

She reached for her laptop, the soft glow of the screen illuminating her room as she opened her latest novel. Writing had always been her refuge, a creative outlet where she could escape into the worlds she crafted. Plus, it was her silent act of defiance towards her family, who opposed her passion and desires. This was also the reason why she was saving her income from writing separately in a bank account not known by her family; it was her personal pride when she was feeling down, that she achieved and earned something by herself because of her hard work and not because of her family or social privilege.

Over time, she had garnered a good following for her stories, and she was committed to delivering regular updates to her readers.

With determination, Bella began to type, her fingers dancing across the keyboard as she delved into the intricacies of her latest narrative. Writing provided her with a sense of purpose and a distraction from the tumultuous emotions that had consumed her.

As she updated her novel and set a release schedule for upcoming chapters, Bella found a semblance of peace in the act of creation. It was a way to channel her restless energy and make sense of the conflicting emotions that swirled within her. In the quiet of her room, she poured herself into her writing, the words flowing from her with a cathartic intensity that offered a brief respite from the chaos of her feelings.

The next morning arrived, and Bella found herself faced with the inevitability of having to go for breakfast.

As she made her way to the dining area, Bella's steps felt heavy, each one a reminder of the tangled web of emotions she had become ensnared in. She knew that she would inevitably see Reid, and the thought of encountering him again after the events of the previous day sent a shiver down her spine.

Despite the turmoil within her, Bella resolved to maintain a facade of composure. She had always been a master at concealing her innermost feelings, and she would continue to do so, especially in front of her family.

Bella arrived at the breakfast table with a forced smile, determined to maintain a composed facade. She greeted everyone with polite nods, taking her seat at the table with a sense of trepidation. Her eyes darted briefly toward Reid, who was engrossed in a conversation with her father, Richard. To her relief, it seemed that he was preoccupied with their discussion, sparing her the discomfort of locking gazes with him.

As she settled into her seat, Bella's mother, seated opposite her, noticed her daughter's anxious demeanour. With concern in her eyes, she leaned in and asked quietly, "Are you feeling better, dear?" Her mother's question served as a timely distraction, pulling Bella's attention away from her thoughts of Reid.

Bella managed a nod and a forced smile, responding, "Yes, Mom, I'm feeling better." She appreciated her mother's concern but couldn't bring herself to reveal the true source of her distress.

With Reid engrossed in the conversation with her father and her mother's attention momentarily diverted, Bella felt a momentary reprieve from the intensity of the situation.

"Bella, you missed quite the shopping adventure yesterday," her mother exclaimed, her eyes lighting up as she recalled the extravagant boutiques and luxurious items they had perused.

"I found the most exquisite dresses and accessories. I even got you a little something special."

Her mother continued to share stories about the shopping excursion, detailing the high-end boutiques and the exclusive designer pieces they had encountered. Bella listened, nodding politely, but her mind remained distant, still haunted by the memory of what she had witnessed by the pool the previous day.

As breakfast neared its end, an unexpected moment unfolded. Reid, who had been engaged in a conversation with Bella's father, Richard, suddenly turned his attention directly to Bella. His deep voice cut through the ambient chatter, addressing her directly.

"Bella, I heard from your parents that you weren't feeling too well yesterday," Reid said, his eyes fixed on her that sent a shiver down her spine.

Bella felt her heart skip a beat as she found herself frozen in place; her gaze locked on Reid's intense eyes.

She had not anticipated this direct interaction, and her initial response was one of surprise. Nevertheless, she managed to gather herself quickly and replied, albeit a bit nervously, "I'm feeling better now, thank you."

Reid's composed smile remained firmly in place as he responded, "I'm glad to hear that. I hope you'll be back to your usual self soon. Let us know if you need anything."

With those words, he smoothly transitioned back into his conversation with Richard, seamlessly rejoining the discussion as if nothing had happened. Bella, on the other hand, was left with a flurry of emotions. His brief but direct inquiry had caught her off guard and his detached attitude sliced into her heart.

The detached and cordial look in his eyes was the opposite of the gaze they shared yesterday. She knew now and there that she would never be able to erase from her memory his face of abandon, pleasure and pain; she couldn’t unsee the beast that was in control yesterday, which scared her and attracted her at the same time.

She wondered who was the real Reid, the beastly one or the cold one?
