Silk and Steel: Forbidden Desires Chapter 53

After his encounter with Bella, Reid stepped out into the cool Texas night, the door closing behind him with a soft creak. Boris, his loyal head of security, waited for him outside, his expression a mix of confusion and concern. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the farm.

"Boris," Reid began, placing a hand on his shoulder, "You stay here overnight. Watch over Bella. She and the child are my top priorities now."

Boris furrowed his brow, his usual stoic expression reflecting his uncertainty. "But sir, what about your safety? Shouldn't I be with you?"

Reid shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips. "Boris, my safety is of no concern tonight, I have the rest of the team with me. Bella needs protection, and I trust you with that task. Besides, I want you to get to know her. She'll be an essential part of my life."

Boris blinked, trying to process the unexpected turn of events. "Mr. Carter, I thought we were here to find her, not… not to become her protector."

Reid chuckled, patting Boris on the back. "Life is full of surprises, my friend. Tonight, you're guarding the future Mrs. Carter, even if she's not aware of it yet, and the heir to the Carter empire."

Boris's eyes widened, a mixture of shock and disbelief on his face. "Sir, I never expected—"

Reid interrupted him, a glint of determination in his eyes. "Sometimes, the unexpected is what changes everything. Keep them safe, Boris. I'll be back tomorrow."

With that, Reid turned away and walked towards the waiting SUVs, leaving Boris standing in the moonlit darkness. The engine roared to life, and the convoy pulled away, leaving a trail of dust in the quiet Texas night.

Back at the farm, Boris stood there for a moment, contemplating the weight of his new responsibility. Bella, the woman who had unknowingly captured Reid's attention, was now under his protection. He shook his head, a small smile forming on his lips. He never thought that her pregnancy is related to Reid. Life was indeed full of surprises.

As the night settled in, Boris took his position outside, vigilant and watchful. Bella, nestled in her bed, contemplated the unexpected turn of events. The man who once rejected her was now leaving a security detail behind to protect her and their unborn child. It was a lot to take in.

In the SUV, Reid stared out into the darkness, thoughts swirling in his mind. The journey was just beginning, and he couldn't predict where it would lead. The only certainty was that Bella had become an integral part of his life, and he was determined to make things right.

He knew that it would be a media scandal and him getting together with Bella would send waves in their social circles, but fuck them all. He always did as he pleased, and he didn’t give a damn about anyone. He stopped caring about appearances a long time ago.

In the quiet moments after his departure from Bella's farm, Reid found himself enveloped in a flurry of emotions he'd buried deep within for years. The drive back to the city was silent, the hum of the car's engine serving as a background to the storm brewing within his mind.

He stared out of the window, the Texas landscape passing by in a blur. Thoughts of Bella spun around his head like a whirlwind, stirring feelings he hadn't allowed himself to acknowledge before. The reunion had stirred a dormant part of him, emotions he'd masked behind a facade of stoicism and distance.

"Why now?" he wondered aloud, though there was no one to answer his question but the echoing silence. The memories of his past, his childhood struggles, his ascent from destitution to success, his past betrayal, all seemed to collide with the unexpected feelings he held for Bella. He had never revealed these depths of his history to anyone, not even to Richard, his closest confidant.

It surprised him how much he wanted to protect her, not just for the child they shared, but for her own well-being. He realized he was determined, driven by an instinct he couldn't quite comprehend. The old Reid would never have felt this urge to safeguard someone, especially not after his attitude towards women. This is the reason he never dated and always hired professional escorts with strong non-disclosure agreements. He never wanted to be vulnerable again.

As the convoy made its way back to the city, Reid's internal monologue continued, a conversation with himself that he'd never expected to have. "I've always been detached, guarded. But with her, it's different," he admitted silently. He'd always operated by logic, by calculations, and sudden rushes of emotion unsettled him. It was as if the logical and emotional sides of himself were at war.

"Why do I feel like this? Why do I care?" he questioned himself, trying to dissect the unfamiliar sensations. The enigma of Bella left him puzzled, intrigued, and utterly shaken. He couldn't fathom the depth of the emotions swirling within him, the mixture of guilt, regret, and a strange sense of longing.

Reid acknowledged that his behavior was uncharacteristic, but he couldn't shake off the notion that his reunion with Bella was a turning point in his life. Despite his resolve to keep things distant and controlled, an undeniable urge pulled him towards her, urging him to make amends, to try to right the wrongs.

"Perhaps it's time for a change," he mused, a rare admission from someone who had always held tightly to the status quo. The idea of embracing change, especially one fueled by emotions, was unsettling, yet it sparked a flicker of hope within him.

By the time the convoy reached the hotel, Reid had resolved to tread cautiously. Bella's presence had unearthed emotions he wasn't prepared to confront, but he was determined to navigate this uncharted territory. He needed to protect her, not just for the child, but also from whatever repercussions her disappearance might bring and the grip of her family and from the media.

The morning was laden with anticipation and nervous energy for both Reid and Bella. Reid picked up his phone and composed a message to Bella, the words carefully crafted to maintain a casual tone while masking the whirlwind of emotions within.

“Good morning, Bella. Would you like to join me for lunch today? There's a place I'd like to take you.”

He hesitated for a moment, contemplating whether to add a playful touch to his message.

“Let's make it a date.”

He hit send and stared at the screen, wondering if his choice of words might have been too forward.

Meanwhile, Bella's heart skipped a beat as she saw Reid's message light up her phone. His invitation surprised her, and the word 'date' lingered in her mind, stirring up a mix of emotions she couldn't quite place.

“Good morning, Reid. Lunch sounds good. Where do you have in mind?”

Her fingers hovered over the screen before adding a hesitant response.

“A date, huh?”

She pressed send before she could second-guess her response. Moments later, Reid's reply popped up, reassuring and slightly cryptic.

“There's a place I know. I'll pick you up around 1 PM. It's a surprise.”

Her heart fluttered at the thought of a surprise, and the use of the word 'date' from Reid made her cheeks flush.

“Alright, looking forward to it.”

She hit send and tucked her phone away, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. She quickly got ready, feeling the weight of the upcoming lunch with Reid.

Reid was already in motion, instructing his assistant to arrange reservations at an elegant and discreet restaurant in the city, ensuring their privacy for the anticipated 'date.' He wanted this encounter to be special, a chance to talk, to understand, and maybe even mend the tangled threads between them.

As the clock ticked closer to 1 pm, both Reid and Bella found themselves in a state of heightened anticipation. The air buzzed with an undercurrent of emotions, a blend of uncertainty and hope, as they readied themselves for this unexpected lunch.

Bella's heart raced as the reality of the upcoming 'date' sank in. Her excitement mingled with panic. She glanced at her modest closet, realizing she had nothing remotely suitable for a fancy lunch. Her frugal lifestyle, a choice she made to save every penny for her pregnancy and baby, left her without any attire appropriate for such an occasion. She owned only a few cheap summer dresses to accommodate her growing belly and large t-shirts and yoga pants.

Her mind raced, a familiar voice echoing old insecurities from the past—her mother's relentless critiques about her appearance. She felt the weight of inadequacy, the fear of being an embarrassment clawing at her.

She paced around her room, debating whether to cancel. The mere thought of facing Reid in her current attire filled her with shame, especially considering his status. After thirty minutes of internal struggle, she finally mustered the courage to send a text.

“Hi Reid, I'm really sorry, but I won't be able to make it for lunch today. Take care.”

As she pressed send, a mix of emotions surged within her. Relief washed over her for dodging a potentially humiliating situation, yet regret and anguish simmered underneath. She felt a pang of disappointment about not having the courage to face Reid, but the fear of embarrassment had overpowered her. She bit her lip nervously, wondering how Reid would react to her abrupt cancelation.

Bella paced back and forth, grappling with her decision. Would Reid understand? Would he be upset? The silence of the phone made her anxious. She felt conflicted, torn between her insecurities and her desire to meet him. The clock ticked on, each passing minute amplifying her anxiety.

Her mind raced, replaying the text she sent, wishing she could retract it, but it was already done. She wondered if she should explain further or leave it as it was. Her thoughts whirled, trapped in a maze of apprehension and self-doubt.

The anticipation of Reid's response gnawed at her, the weight of her decision sitting heavily on her chest. Bella stared at her phone, waiting anxiously for any sign of a reply, hoping that maybe he would understand or give her another chance. The minutes stretched into an agonizing wait, leaving her on edge, wondering what repercussions her message might have on their fragile connection.
