“Please Donna, I’m serious,” he said over the phone, almost with a yell.
“And so am I!” she yelled at him.
He sighed and then with a much calmer voice, spoke. “You can pick anywhere close to your area, any time after work would be just fine with me.”
She sent quiet for a while and brought down the phone. She considered it, maybe she needed closure in order to get over him. She brought the phone back to her ear.
“Fine, I’ll let you know when,” she said with a fisted palm. She heard him let out a breath of relief and he began to talk but she pulled the phone again from her ear and tapped on the button to end the call. She dropped the phone and laid her head on the desk, resting it in her arms.
She dreaded meeting him, how would she react? how should she react? Could she actually go through with this?
Her phone rang, jolting her from her thoughts, and without looking at the caller ID, she slid on the answer button.
“Hello?”
“Hi, um, this number called earlier, sorry I wasn’t able to answer right away, I had a lot on my plate I was working on. I don’t have this number on my contact though so I really do not know whom I am speaking with.”
Donna pulled the phone from her ear and looked at the number, she hadn’t saved it but she recognized the number, a smile came to her lips and she brought the phone back to her ear. “Wayne, it’s Donna.”
“Donna? Donna! Hi!” he laughed and so did she. “Hi! So nice to hear your voice, I’m guessing you received what I delivered to your workplace.”
“Yes, I did.”
“I… err… I hope it was not too much, you looked upset going to work in the morning and I just wanted to lighten you up, hope I didn’t overstep any boundaries?”
She chuckled. “I loved it,” she remembered the note and her eyes went to the rose resting in a vase she had asked Paige to find for her. It sat on the window still and it looked beautiful in contrast to the night sky lit up by the city’s lights. “It does match my hair color.”
He chuckled. “So did you call to turn down my offer?”
“Actually, I had called to push up the time, it’s past eight now, and just want to know if the offer still stands.”
“I am actually driving back right now, I should be on the premises in about three minutes give or take.”
She smiled. “That sounds fine, I’ll pack up and wait for you downstairs.”
“Alright, see you in three.”
She blushed. “In three, bye.”
She stood from her chair, walked around her desk, and came to stand in front of Keith’s office door. She let out a breath, adjusted her dress, and wore a smile before placing her hand on the doorknob.
“Mr. Preston?” Donna knocked once then pushed the door to his office in and she walked in. Keith who was standing by the window turned to face her, he had a half glass of whiskey in his hand and his other arm rested on the lower part of his back.
“Miss Brooks,” he replied.
“If you won’t be needing me for anything else today, I’ll be on my way home now.”
He hummed and looked around his office like he was trying to find any work she could do, then he shook his head. “No, nothing else.”
She smiled. “Alright Mr. Preston, have a good night's rest.” she turned and walked out of the office.
“Donna,” he called out to her and she poked her head back into his office.
“Yes sir?”
“Early tomorrow, no excuses.”
She smiled and nodded her head. “Good night Mr. Preston.” she shut the door, walked into her office, grabbed her bag, and made her way out.
Keith turned back to the window and took a sip of the drink in his hand. He let out a breath, considering the many problems he had to deal with on his plate. The boys, the request he had granted them, and then there was Maxwell Jones, the man who had broken away from The Twelve Order with a few other members to form his own. There was no other way to look at it, Maxwell was now a rouge and a traitor to the Twelve Order. His death was inevitable if they were to have him captured.
He remembered the last time he had been with him was in this same office when he had nearly beaten him to a pulp after he had expressed his sexual desires towards Donna. Now thinking of it, he had no idea why he had gotten that angry. It was normal for he and Max whenever they came together to talk about ladies around them and express their sexual desires, so why had he gotten angry and out of control when it was about Donna?
He shook his head, emptied his glass, then walked back to his desk where the bottle was and refilled it. Walking back to the window he caught sight of Donna leaving the building, he stood on the twenty-seventh floor but his eyesight was just as sharp. He narrowed his eyes at her and a frown came to his face when he saw her walk towards a man leaning on a red truck, she smiled and waved at him, they stood a while and chatted before he extended his hand, leading her around the truck to the other side where he helped her open the doors and held her hand as she got in.
He watched the man get into the driver’s side of the truck and watched as the vehicle rode out of the premises. He gritted his teeth when he remembered Donna telling him that her car had developed a fault yesterday and he had completely forgotten about that. He swallowed the contents in his glass in one gulp, turned away from the window, dropped the glass on his desk, and walked out of the office.
