THE NERD ALPHA Chapter 17

In short, this; Luke's name was called by the nurse on duty.

“Luke Bright. Mister Luke Bright."

Luke immediately stood up followed by Ben who walked beside. Seeing the two of them approaching, the nurse pointed to the examination room door and said, “Please come in, sir . The doctor is waiting."

As soon as he entered, what Luke saw was an old man in a white coat, silvery cropped hair, and a slightly chubby body. Luke couldn't see his face clearly because the doctor was wearing a mask and there were special medical glasses over his normal glasses. He greeted immediately inviting Luke to lie down on the examining chair. While Ben sat waiting at the doctor's table.

After Luke explained all his complaints, the doctor began to examine the oral cavity. From the far right to the far left. From front to back. From top to bottom. Luke felt the cold, tiny object trying to touch between his teeth and gums. The doctor tried to move two or three teeth that he felt had the possibility of falling out. But, all seems in vain because in front of Ben and Luke, the doctor said;

"There's nothing wrong with your teeth, son. All healthy and complete.”

Impatiently, Ben asked, “Then what about the teeth my grandson found in his mouth last night? Luke, show him the pack of teeth. Fast. Oh, you've shown the appearance.

“Ah… that,” the doctor took off his medical glasses and looked at him, “Are you sure you took it from inside your own mouth, boy?”

"Of course, sir ." To be honest, Luke was a bit offended when he asked that, “There's still some left of my saliva in here, if you can't believe it. You can check it out.”

“But, I don't see anything missing from your row of teeth. If it's a wisdom tooth, then there should still be traces of new teeth showing up there. But, in fact there is none. And, boy, humans generally have only four canines, not eight or ten.”

Luke and Benjamin could only look at each other. Felt that the doctor's affirmation was enough for today. After all, he also didn't bother to prescribe medicine or seemed a little reluctant when Ben asked him to check the similarities of the teeth with Luke's. The silver-haired doctor said, he would ask his friend to check whether it was Luke's tooth or not. But, well, I see. The way he spoke was quite unconvincing. So, both of them left.

On the road, again, Ben, who is usually easy to comment on anything, just keeps quiet. Rubbing his wrinkled, hairless beard in exasperation. The time on the way home that afternoon was longer because Ben was completely silent. So to kill the boredom, Luke turns on the radio. At first, there were only songs and then commercials, and by the time they returned to the tree-lined lane, the radio was now broadcasting a news item. Not just any news, but it was news regarding the incident that Luke had in the haunted barn on the edge of the Champbell woods two days ago.

The announcer said on the radio; “…according to officials, around eight teenagers who were trapped in an abandoned barn on the edge of the Champbell forest two days ago, have been brought home safely. As for the wolves trying to attack a group of teenagers, they have also been paralyzed by wildlife experts and several have been taken to the Special Animal Examination Center for further examination. According to Abraham Patel, a spokesman for the Special Animal Examination Center, the wolves may have contracted the rabies virus. This can be seen from the behavior of the wolves that are not afraid or do not avoid human presence and are around human territory. However, this is still under examination. For this reason, Abraham Patel suggested that the public should be wary of stray dogs that are suspected of having strange and very wild behavior. Immediately call 504-555-6666 if you see wolves roaming around where you live.” The news ended.

Arriving home, Luke heard Benjamin approach Ulfa and speak in a low voice.

"Ulf, come here. We have something to talk about," then the two of them entered the room.

Luke also returned to my own room. Checking the messages on the cell phone that came from Valentina. He replied to Luke's message yesterday. Valentina said in her message.

' Hey, Lookey. I'm sorry too. Forget yesterday because we are both angry. I didn't mean that either. '

Luke smiled reflexively. Reassured that Valentina wasn't offended by my behavior yesterday. Even so, Luke didn't want to extend the message and just said thank you. Thankfully Andrew got hold of Luke at just the right time. That is when Val also tries to call Luke but the call doesn't connect. Meanwhile Andrew and Luke ended up on the phone for fifteen minutes where Amy, who had suddenly joined the conversation, asked if Luke was sick and why he wasn't at school.

"Not really sick. Just now I was going to check my teeth, "Luke replied. For the rest they talked about Patricia, about Mrs. Victoria—the flirtatious French teacher—and others.

“…you know what, Luke? Yesterday afternoon, Andrew and I saw Patricia and her gang picking up trash near the tunnel. So, is that their punishment? Good grief! Really not worth it! They deserve to be jailed for nearly putting the three of you in danger. Oh yeah, last night my mother also heard the news about the incident in the forest, Luke. But, I didn't say that it was you, yeah, my mother even scolded me and warned me not to join in if I was invited into the forest. Hello…?! Who else wants to go in there? I'd rather have a seven day and seven night party with Andrew, than having to test my courage in the barn in the forest surrounded by dozens of wolves. Tch! Are you guys shooting Twilight, ha…” Amy babbled incessantly.

Luke could only chuckle. Not only that, Amy also told him about the treatment of Patricia and her gang on Rei Suzurao which was getting worse.

“I don't know whether to tell you this or not Lookey ,” Amy said in a worried tone, “But when you came home early yesterday I saw Patricia drag Rei into the girls' bathroom and looked like she was about to be beaten there. You know, it's not that we don't want to help,” he added quickly. "It's just that, when I was about to go in there, Chairine and Rose Anne kicked out everyone who was going in. So, well…”

"Then, what about Rei?"

“Fortunately Andrew quickly reported to the teacher. Finally, we drove Rei home. He was silent when we asked. Who knows. You're close to him, Luke. You just ask him if he's okay."

"Okay. Tomorrow or later, I will ask him. Thanks for telling me, Amy.”

The call had to stop because Amy had to take lessons in the Biology laboratory. On top of that, Luke was tired enough but too bored to stay home. So, around four o'clock in the afternoon, Luke sat down on the front porch. Intending to wait for Rei to pass by the road in front of the Bright family's house, and he did. They greeted each other and Rei seemed fine.

"In fact I want to ask you, Luke," said Rei, " Are you okay?".
