She didn't know how long they waited to ensure the rogues would leave. James didn't say anything. He was closing his eyes while they tried to listen to their surroundings.
“You're my master, but you didn't even try to fight with them. I'm thinking, why you didn't do it?” Veronica whispered. She was panting as she couldn't breathe properly because of the space in the cave.
James glared at her but held her arms. He tightened his grip on her hand. “We need to go back to the safe house. You can't breathe properly.” He muttered.
“I'm fine. I'm just thinking, why you didn't fight with them?” Veronica didn't want to stop until she finally got her desired answer. She was curious, for she knew how James knew how to fight.
“You are with me. I don't want to gamble to fight with them while you run with me.” James answered. She was dumbfounded. Does it mean she was a burden in his eyes? She heard her wolf growling in anger.
Her lips trembled and pushed James' hand, making James stunned momentarily. She gritted her teeth and crossed her arms.
“Are you trying to say that I'm weak? I know how to fight now!” Veronica almost yelled, but she stopped herself. She gulped to stop herself from getting mad at James. She doesn't like to hear those words.
She was known as weak. A burden to someone, then James had dared to slap those words in her face? How could he?
James had a calm expression. He hardly breathes and decides not to fight with Veronica verbally. Rogues haunted them, and he was sure that once he fought back, especially to a woman, they could be caught!
“Veronica, this is not the place to pull your tantrums. Did you forget that those rogues are still haunting us? If you want to fight, then we can fight with them. Don't blame me if you lose your life in the end.”
“Shit.” Veronica cursed loudly. She looked away because James' words made her think he genuinely felt he was such a significant burden to him. She didn't say anything afterward and gave James a silent treatment.
James was confused. He couldn't understand why Veronica didn't say anything. He felt that Veronica might stab him behind his back.
“Is there something wrong?” He couldn't stop to ensure he didn't do anything wrong to her. He swallowed.
“It's nothing. You're right. I'm trying to throw m tantrums...” Veronica answered it with a deep tone, making James couldn't stop to overthink. He was thinking about what he had done to make Veronica feel unhappy.
“What is it? I want you to be honest with me. What's the matter?”
Veronica sighed before she replied, “You can't fight with them because I'm such a burden to you. I'm sorry. If I know how to defend myself, maybe you will not hide like this, a coward.”
“Veronica, hiding from your enemy doesn't mean you're weak. It's better to hide than to fight without even using our brains. Not all battles are worth fighting for. I'm thinking about you, but it doesn't mean you're a burden. I'm just concerned because I didn't want you hurt.” James mumbled.
She didn't know what she was going to say. She felt a warmth touched her chest. She thought that she was the most essential woman because of what James had told her.
“You might get hurt because of Alpha Jaxon, but it doesn't mean you will hurt next. I know that you will be smart enough to choose your battles. You're not a hero to fight all of the battles at the same time.” James added.
She grinned and felt her cheeks burn because of James. She didn't dare to say something, especially when James held her hand.
“Let's go home. They are not here anymore. If you want to fight them, then learn something that will help you to defend yourself. I won't stop you from killing them if you already passed. For now, we didn't fight with them because we all know the limitations of our abilities. Did you even know that they are a hundred rogues out there?” James was trying to make her feel better. Her eyes expanded when she heard that the rogues were a lot.
“How did you know? You didn't even see them.” There was an accusation in her tone. She was thinking that James might be lying to her.
He smirked and looked at her with a proud on his face. He had already predicted that she wouldn't believe him even though he told her the truth.
“I have sensitive ears.” He replied. He didn't bother to explain everything to her. What was important to him was that he was telling the truth. “Let's go. We must ensure we are back in our home before they return here.”
“This is your place. Why are they trying to kill us?”
“This is not mine. I only used these parts of the mountains because everything here could greatly help our training. Rogues were too violent, and they didn't even think to obey someone. They were the rules breaker. As long as they can kill someone, it's fine with them. Their groups were full of killers; they were born here in this place.”
Veronica was frightened when she heard about rogues. She didn't protest when James held her hand and dragged her out into the cave. She was silent and didn't want to create any noise to make the rogues find out that they were in the land.
Two months passed, but James kept teaching her some survival skills. She groaned when James threw a fruit in her direction, so she quickly received it while she had a blindfold on her eyes. She chuckled when he cursed.
“You successfully enhance your hearing. That's good news. As the Alpha, you need to ensure everything is under your control. You can't have only one plan because we're talking about the innocent members here. Some Alpha might be deceiving, so you better prepare yourself that some Alpha will use you to gain their power.” James started talking. She was used to that James had a lot of opinions whenever she did everything perfectly. She was pleased to hear it.
Her eyes went blank, and she remembered Jaxon had used her to stumbled their pack. She gritted her teeth and threw the fruit in James' direction.
James quickly accepted it, and there was confusion on his face. He pouted, took a thrown fruit, and threw it simultaneously.
Her eyes widened, but she quickly received the three fruits. She laughed. She felt proud of herself. James was a great help to her, but James always informed her that she had a lot of things that she needed to learn.
After they finished their training, James coughed when he took a letter. He gave it to her, making her shocked.
“Your sister send you a letter. It seems essential because there is a red line here.” He pointed out the upper part of the scroll. She gulped in nervousness and felt that she couldn't breathe properly. What happened to their pack?
She was sure Ava didn't like to disturb her from her training, especially if it wasn't necessary. She opened the scroll, and her eyes widened when she read the letter's content.
