"I'm not..." She was saying then stopped. "Never mind"
'I'm not what?...' I wonder what she wanted to say. 'I'm not Evelyn's spy? I'm not here for revenge?... What? Why did she suddenly decide to clam up?' Since she was so eager to work with me then shouldn't she be assuring me I'm wrong in my thinking about her? Could it be that my suspicions are right? Or could it be she just does not give a damn about what I think of her?
"Can my daughter stay? She's not a member of the executives. Do you mind if she sits in on our meeting?"
Her voice brought me out of my thoughts. Now she wants her daughter to stay so she can have another pair of ears and eyes to listen to and watch every one of our movements. Why isn't she completing her sentence from before?
I chuckle silently.
'Let's see how far both of them can go in carrying out their plans.' I say to myself before replying to her...
"I don't see why not if you can get her to behave, be respectful, and not speak out of turn. If not then I would be glad to incarcerate her in the mansion dungeon if she annoys me, I promise you."
Mother and daughter look at me like I'm a tyrant and I smirk back at them. I said what I said, it's left for them to decide if they want to test my limit or not. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.
'Watch these two closely guys. They might be thinking of avenging Drew's supposed death. I'm not really sure about their intentions though but let's be watchful' I tell my team my suspicious through our mind link so they would be on high alert
'Yes, General!' They chorused
"Let me ask you this Carol. Which executive is in charge of the pack's patrol?" I started the meeting by asking her.
"Everyone..." She simply replies.
I raised a brow at her in response. 'What sort of answer is everyone? How can everyone be on patrol in a pack?'
"What I mean is, every one of us the executives have our people signed up for the pack's patrol. I don't know how it's done elsewhere but the Silver Moon is the biggest in North America and signing up pretty much everyone who can fight is the only way we can cover up for the sort of manpower needed to patrol a pack as big as this." As she talks, she uses her fingers to demonstrate the quoting signs when she said 'everyone who can fight'
"Okay..." I say and nod in Understanding before asking...
"So when was the last time the land was patrolled?"
"Every day. There's no day we don't patrol." She proudly replied "I was on patrol duty but had to leave my duty post and had someone else take over from me when I got your email for the executives' meeting"
"Okay, explain to me the plan of how it's been done. I mean which group is in charge of where? You all have a plan in place for the patrol, right?"
"Of course we do! What do you take us for?"
I don't know if my question or attitude was condescending since she replied to me snappishly. Before I can comment on how she's really getting on my nerves with her attitude, Eric who has been silent chuckles coldly
"I'm not sure if you realize the presence of who you are yet. But just in case you don't, I'll remind you for the first and last time. Unless you want to spend the whole week inside the dungeon then I suggest you mind the tone and manner with which you speak in front of your Alpha. Am I understood?"
"Okay, Eric..."
"It's Beta to you, Zeta!" Eric coldly growls, making her sit straight in her chair.
"I am your superior! You don't ever address me by my name unless I've permitted you to do so!"
"Understood, Beta..." She replies with a curt nod. She looks surprised by the manner Eric spoke to her. Maybe because she knew him while growing up she felt it's okay to act as she pleases.
She turns towards me, "Please pardon my attitude, Alpha."
"Go ahead and answer the question I asked you," I say in reply to her apology.
"The pack has three entrances and all three entrances are manned by the Gammas. I think it's four or five Gammas per gate. I'm not sure, only the Gamma chief can answer that for certain. As for the patrol, we divided the pack into four, the north, south, west, and east. Four executives including myself were put in charge of each of them. I'm in charge of the west..."
"Right, but I'm actually interested in the eastern part of the pack. Who is in charge of that part?"
"Eastern part? Why are you interested in the east if I may ask?" She answered my question with another question and I silently raised my brow at her in annoyance. I hate it when someone answers my question with another question. She would soon get the memo if I decide to keep her around after today.
"I'm sorry but I asked the question because I was in charge of the east before. I and my warriors were giving the east because it bordered the desert and also because that area is the most vulnerable in the pack."
"Vulnerable?... Has the pack ever been attacked from there before?"
"Yes, by the rogues. They had always stayed clear of Silver-Moon pack, I guess they were scared about our size until three years ago when the attack began. I remember the first time it happened vividly. It was August 30th, early in the morning around 2 am.
'Three years ago, on August 30th. Do you remember that day? That was the first day Uncle Knox called for us to return home.' Eric says through our mind link
'Yeah, I remember...' I reply to him.
I remembered because it was the day after my 25th birthday. Eric and I joked about writing the date down as a memorable one. Even if I had known that my dad was desperate for me to come and take control of the pack, I'm sure I wouldn't have come since I was still very angry with him then.
"...and ever since then, there have been sporadic attacks always in the night and early in the morning..." Her voice brought me back from my thoughts.
"Six months ago, the attack became more constant, like two to three times in a month, and from nights and early mornings, it became broad daylight. I lost three of my men three months ago to the attack, that was when the Alpha decided to erect an electric fence and it really helped. We've not had any attacks ever since."
"Hmmm..." I say, nodding my head. "You said you were in charge of the east before. Who is in charge of the border now."
She chuckles
"It's funny but I actually don't know who is in charge between Zachary and Lindsey. It was..."
"I'm sorry, you don't?... You don't know who you handed over to? Was it not discussed with you before the decision was made to take the place away from you? Did you stop caring after you lost some of your men? I thought you said you took your duties seriously. Was my father aware of the decision when it was taken?" I fire rapidly at her. I'm mad by the nonchalant attitude she used in telling me she didn't know who is currently in charge of the place.
