In the following days, lawyer Kevin and I only discussed the litigation through email. Everything went smoothly beyond my expectations.
One night, Dominic suddenly told me that he wanted to take me to meet some of his friends. This made me a little confused, but inside I felt a sense of joy. Meeting his friends meant he wanted to draw me closer to his world, no longer just his secret mistress or three-month fiancee.
I got excited and asked Ruby to help me choose a beautiful dress. I don't expect his friends to look at me with the same disdain as country girls, because that would embarrass him.
A slit dress, some glittery jewelry and perfect make-up. I looked at myself a few times in the mirror, then confidently got in the car and sat with Dominic.
"You fit this style, Esther."
"Thank you, Ruby chose this dress for me." I smiled shyly.
Currently, I have clearly defined my feelings. I know I admire him, and have a crush on him too, but it probably doesn't really matter that much whether he loves me or not. I will take advantage of the short time left to love him.
The party was held in a lavish mansion. Dominic took my hand and led me in.
"Wow, I didn't expect you to bring your girlfriend to our party today."
The host of the party, Rory Frank, is Dominic's best friend.
Dominic said nothing, his hand gently touching my waist as an affirmation that I was his woman.
According to what Dominic told me, Rory and Dominic were best friends since college, then went abroad to study and returned home to establish a corporation. For someone as deeply educated as Dominic and his friends, I've always felt that they were admirable.
Their lives are far different from mine. From a young age, I was used to taking care of myself, cooking and cleaning to help my mother. Most of the time I would learn ballet from her, then follow her to perform in many places to earn money. Because our family was too poor, I didn't go to school until middle school. After that, I moved to the city and decided to quit school to earn money.
I still remember the old days when my great-grandfather Joan called to ask me to return to Joan's mansion, how happy I was in my heart. Joan's mansion looks like a fairy tale castle to me, and Kaylin is a princess loved by everyone. I used to like her very much too, I could obediently watch Kaylin learn ballet without disturbing her. But she doesn't like me. As long as there were no other people around, she would sneakily pull my hair and pinch my arms until I burst into tears.
Since then, I don't like Kaylin anymore.
Right now, our relationship is probably the enemy.
While I was thinking about it, someone called my name.
"Esther Joan, sit down with us."
Some of the girls in the party took my hand and asked me to sit next to them. I just picked up some delicious food and a cocktail. Dominic was busy chatting with the other boys, and it would be embarrassing for me to stick to him, so I did as they said. Since it's Dominic's friend's party, I don't need to worry too much about putting myself in danger. Moreover, this party is also quite fun, the music is bustling without being too loud. Everyone is free to choose their favorite food and drink, there is also a swimming pool in the garden for everyone to play in, but because the early winter weather is a bit chilly, few people come here.
The girls seem to be quite friendly, their stories often revolve around issues like cosmetics, fashion, handsome guys or something. These are all things that I don't understand and don't have much knowledge about, so I just sit quietly and listen to them talk.
"It's been a while since I've seen Dominic Arnold. I've heard he's been busy with corporate affairs lately. Ah, and of course busy with 'that' as well."
When I heard the girls mention Dominic, I voluntarily focused on listening.
"''That'?"
The girl in the red dress waved her hand and asked everyone to close their ears, then whispered: arms trade.
Hearing this, my hand holding the wine glass trembled slightly. I knew Dominic came from an extremely wealthy and respected family, his career was also extremely flourishing, but I did not expect him to be an arms dealer. It seems that this is not a secret information among the elite, because Dominic's close friends all know. However, not everyone knows exactly how Dominic does the job. They only knew that Dominic had to travel abroad often and heard that the job was also quite dangerous.
"Oh my, if I could be the wife of a man like Dominic, I would have no regrets. Why does such a handsome, attractive and dangerous man exist?"
The girls laughed, they all agreed with the brown girl. She pouted at Dominic then continued.
"But I heard he's just engaged to a girl."
"What?"
"Impossible."
"He has a fiancée? I think I'm going to cry."
The girls all jumped up, everyone seemed surprised to hear the hot brown girl say that.
I remained silent, pretending to know nothing, even though I was the fiancée of Dominic mentioned in the story.
"Everyone calm down. This is just a rumour. I heard Dominic introduced her to his family members. Her identity is still a secret." The brown girl said.
"I'm curious, I really want to know what that girl looks like."
"God, I can't even believe Dominic is getting married. He still seems to be open and amiable with hot girls."
The girl in the red skirt pursed her lips, straightened her shiny curly hair, and walked towards Dominic with two glasses of champagne.
My eyes follow her, my heart in my chest inexplicably beats faster and faster. Almost, in a moment of panic, I was about to stop her and say I was Dominic's fiancée.
But then I didn't do it.
I sat quietly and watched. From where I was sitting, I couldn't hear what they were talking about. However, they behave quite intimately. The girl in the red dress leaned close to him, pulled down his collar slightly, and whispered something in his ear. Then they laughed together. Dominic's smile was bright and comfortable, like talking to that red-dressed girl was really fun.
They clink glasses of champagne, then I see their faces come closer together. At this point, I dare not look any further. I turned away, trying to keep myself calm. Maybe they kissed, I guess, but I can only sit here and sadly sip my bland cocktail. The rumor about Dominic seems to be quite true, he really is a lady-killer, maybe that red-dressed girl used to be one of his beautiful girlfriends.
I know I envy that girl, but I lack confidence to stand up and win my man back. I hate my weak and indecisive personality.
To lighten the mood a bit, I decided to go for a walk by the pool.
