Mated to my human best friend.
Chapter 10
Kate
Days went by and everything fell back to normal between Kyle and I. Memories of that day still haunted my mind and dreams, but I didn't dare talk about it.
Kyle seemed okay now, so there was no need to complicate things. We talk and go to school together. Just like old times.
Today's another day and a new week. It's only a day until my birthday. I will be 18 in a bit. I'm so happy. I’m already a grown-up lady.
I started singing while getting dressed for school. My phone began to ring. I leave my bedroom to go pick up my phone in the living room. It was my Dad.
"Hello, Dad," I said as I answered the phone on the second ring. I knew why he was calling me.
"Hello, my sweet darling! How are you?" He asked. I can tell he was happy by the way his voice sounded.
"I’m good, Dad, what about you?" I asked, "I hope you are not stressing yourself out with the Pack stuff,"
"Hmmm. I'm good and stressed out at the same time," he replied. "I have no one to abandon the pack work to. You will be 18 tomorrow, and I can't wait for you to meet your mate. I can’t wait to hand over my position and my work to you and your mate,"
What? He’s trying to run away from his duties? Nah, not gonna happen. I won’t let him play with my brain.
"Just tell me that you are kidding, Dad. So you've been anticipating my turning 18 so you could tie me down with your responsibilities? Don't get any funny ideas, Dad. I won’t be the pack's Luna anytime soon. I’m going to enjoy my time with my mate. So, my dear Dad, you still have a lot of work to do. Don’t think of escaping and abandoning the pack works,"
"You are my daughter and the heir to the throne," he said. "It’s your right to protect and direct your people. You should start acting like a leader and a true Luna."
"Dad, stop trying to blackmail me. It's emotional blackmail," I snapped, "I'm not denying the fact that I am your heir, but please spare me your lies. I don’t want to act like a Luna now. I'll spend some time with my mate before thinking about ruling my people and working my ass off for the pack."
He cried out over the phone, "youuuuuu!!!"
"Don’t hurt my eardrum, Dad," I mumbled, "And just you know, I won't be coming home to celebrate my birthday. Don’t expect me or make any plans for my birthday."
"I don’t think you know what you are talking about," he stated. "Why won’t you come home to celebrate your 18th birthday? Are you not eager to know who your mate is?"
"I will find him when I get back. I promised someone here to celebrate my day with him, and he's a very important person to me."
"I don’t think anyone should be more important than you finding your mate, darling," he said. "I don't know who that person is. All I know is that you must come home tomorrow. You have to,"
"Dad, I'm sorry, but I can't. I need to go now. I'm late for school."
"Wait, darling!" My Father's voice sounded before I cut the call.
Why is everyone talking about mates as if they are the ultimate aspect of being a werewolf? I don’t know much about them or how they work. I have no mother to teach me. Mother's place is irreplaceable, and no matter how my Dad tries to explain it, I can never understand. I should stop bothering myself and start preparing to go to school.
I had my breakfast when I finished putting on my clothes. I’m good to go. I picked up my bag and my keys. I checked around before stepping out. I locked my house with my keys and started walking to where I was supposed to take a bus to school.
I was standing and waiting for the bus when someone in a red car pulled up beside me. I couldn’t see who was in the car as it had tinted glass. The stranger rolled down the window, and it was no other person but Kyle.
"Hey, my darling, Kate! Good morning," he said, inviting me to come in for a ride.
I opened the car door and took my seat before uttering, "Good morning to you, Kyle."
"How was your night? I’m sure you slept well. Your face is glowing," he whispered.
"Thank you for your compliment, Kyle. And yeah, I did sleep well." I took a second to look around. "Whose car is this?"
I know Kyle's parents are one of the richest and most powerful people in this city. As his parent's only child, he was lavished with gifts. They provided him with anything he wished for. As the only child of his parents, he was spoiled, but he was well-trained by them. And he had all the love a child should. He has different cars, but I have never seen him drive this particular one.
"This is my new baby," he responded.
"Oh, and when do you get this?" I asked. "Why are you wasting money?"
"Money is meant to be spent, daring, and I brought this baby specifically to take you out tomorrow. You know that tomorrow is a special day for you, and I must make it special, honey. Don’t you like it?"
I never imagined his answer would be like this. Why did he buy a new car for himself just to take me out? Don’t tell me Kyle has a crush on me.
"Hey, Ky, do you have a crush on me?" I asked, raising my eyebrow. "You have been acting weird lately."
"Have you figured it out?" He smirked. "That I have a thing for you?"
"What?! When? When do you start having a crush on me?"
"Heyy! What are you talking about? I’m just joking. Why should I have a crush on you?" He laughed awkwardly. "You know who I love. You know Tina is my girlfriend. I don’t want her to hear this and misunderstand us. I don’t want her thinking that I've got a crush on my best friend,"
"Really? You were joking? But why do I feel you were acting weird?" I asked.
"I’m not acting weird and if you think I'm weird because I told you I bought a car just to celebrate your special day, then I’m sorry. I don’t have any strange thoughts about you, and neither am I trying to make you my girlfriend."
"Hmmm! Okay then."
Our ride to school was silent. Neither of us uttered a single word to each other. Was it wrong to tell him what I was thinking? Was my wolf right about him?
I think I was wrong. He’s right. He doesn’t have a crush on me. He’s in love with his girlfriend. Why should I even think that he has a crush on me in the first place?
"You are always eager to have a boyfriend. That's why you always think every guy has a crush on you," my wolf taunted. "Get your acts together, bitch. Our mate will be showing up tomorrow. He shouldn't see your mind all fucked-up with thoughts of some useless human!"
