One Rocky Term Chapter 37

~Chiamaka

I scanned through the room in search of Kaira. The crowd of students present in the small hall made it quite impossible to find her. I tried pushing my way through the crowd while searching desperately for her.

Finally I found her leaning next to a table in a corner of the hall which was surprisingly unoccupied by the rest of the students. After I managed to get past the crowd, I headed straight for her.

"We need to talk," I said on getting to where she was standing. She didn't seem very concerned about what I had to tell her as she continued eating fruits from a bowl with the knife in her hand.

"What do you want to talk about?" She asked gently using the tip of her knife to pick up a strawberry. "You have gotten rid of Alya right? She's probably having a mental breakdown now all thanks to you. Aren't you happy yet?" she asked again before I could answer her first question.

"You brought up the idea..." I started saying but she interrupted me.

"No, I didn't. You crafted the idea from my story and decided it was nice to do such an inhumane thing to someone you claimed was your best friend," she said calmly.

Why she was suddenly acting as if she cared about Alya was something I couldn't understand. It seemed as if her short stay at home had really messed with her head.

"I called you and told you about what I wanted to do..."

"And I asked you not to," she said interrupting me again. "I agree that making sure she isn't in the best mental state to expect whatever is coming her way might be helpful and you must feel very satisfied to have gotten your revenge but your entire approach was just messed up," she added shaking her head slightly in disappoinment.

I stared at her. Was she really trying to blame me and make me feel guilty for something she orchestrated? I didn't exactly know how but it felt so much as if the idea was brought up by her.

I stood in confusion for a while before remembering the main reason I wanted to speak to her.

"That's not what I came to discuss," I said and she only nodded. I continued speaking, "I know you helped me a lot but I really don't appreciate how you are always hovering around Ifeanyi. I find it really strange and I know you have a reason for everything you are doing but I think it's enough with your games now."

She kept quiet and stared down at the knife in her hand.

"So you want me to stay away from Ifeanyi?" She asked in her calm voice which usually gave me shivers.

"Yes!"

She smiled before muttering "whatever".

I stood there for a while wondering if that was a positive answer or not.

"Is that a yes or...?"

"Neither. You may leave now," she said finally looking up at me.

"I won't until you give me a reasonable reply."

"I think it would be best if you left."

"And what will you do if I don't?" I challenged her. She kept quiet. I was about to speak again when I felt a sharp pain in my wrist.

I winced as I took a look at my wrist. There was a thin line which slowly filled with blood. I stared wide-eyed at the injury Kaira had just inflicted on me with the knife in her hand.

Before I could even ask what was wrong with her, I noticed her lifting the knife again. I also noticed that she would swing it in the direction of my belly and I caught it right in time. She was a little faster than I had expected and I caught it somewhere between the blade and the handle as it pointed directly at my stomach. I ignored the small cut I got in the process of stopping the knife.

Before I could blink, Kaira had let go of the knife and not allowing me to process anything I heard her scream.

"SOMEONE HELP! SHE'S TRYING TO END HER LIFE!!"

Startled, the knife fell from my hand but everyone in that small hall had their attention on me at the moment each throwing me a different look.

"DON'T JUST STAND THERE HELP HER!" Kaira yelled and some students rushed towards me each seemingly panicked. Before I knew what was happening I was being led out of the hall by a group of concerned students.

I looked over my shoulder and saw Kaira who offered me a small smile before I was ushered out of the hall.

"I really can't believe she's Ami Tara's daughter. Is that why she has been throwing attitude up and down. You'll be talking to someone and she will be behaving as if there's no one there just because she is related to some stupid celebrity. It's not like anyone really even liked her to begin with," Chudi said to no one in particular.

I didn't know what his problem was with Alya because they were both sports prefects and they seemed to have gotten along pretty well but for some reason he had been on Alya's case since this morning.

In fact everyone in my class was on her case. Even those from the other S.S.S.3 classes were found in my class and Chudi just happened to be one of them.

I would give anything to not hear all the horrible things that were said about her and I would have said something if I didn't know my classmates well enough to know that that would only be the fuel to fire which they needed to cause an explosion. I only prayed she didn't get to hear any of their comments.

Speaking of which, I hadn't even seen her all day.

"I swear down. That girl is an idiot. Forming what I don't know," Adanna also from the C class added with a hiss.

"There's nothing we shall not see shaa," Angelica added. With the exception of Chudi, none of the other people who spoke about Alya ever liked her so it wasn't so surprising that they were bad mouthing her.

"It isn't a wonder that she punched Aldrin. Just because he was dared to kiss her. She feels as if she could do whatever shit she feels like whenever she pleases. As if pushing the boy away wasn't enough for her, she just had to make him bleed," Angelica continued.

This particularly piqued my interest. From Angelica's story, Aldrin was dared to kiss Alya. I had given the idea a thought but discarded it thinking that she would have pushed him away if it was a dare.

But the truth was that she did push him away. She even punched him and I had initially believed that she somehow had feelings for him. And based on that I had been acting like an awful jerk to her.

Why did I keep fucking and messing things up? It just seemed as if I had perfected the act.

"Please leave the stupid girl. It's not her fault but that of her senses," another person randomly piped in. I stared at the seat I had initially occupied which was next to Chiamaka, Aldrin and Ubaro's seats.

Chiamaka wasn't in class, Aldrin sat with his head on the table and Ubaro sat remaining as mute as he had always been. He was the only person I still talked to every once in a while even though he seemed thorn between me and Aldrin.

As more talks about Alya being Ami Tara's daughter flew around the air and more negative comments were passed about Alya, for reasons I yet couldn't understand, I decided to leave the class finally fed up.

I exited the class without anyone noticing and decided that calling a teacher to class wouldn't be such a terrible idea as it would shut my lousy classmates up and it would be a nice punishment for them.

It was still quite early, a bit too early for teachers to be in classes yet but I figured out that I could convince a teacher to come to class with ease because we were in an exam class.

I was already down the hallway leading to the staff room when I spotted Alesscia in the adjacent building which happened to be one of the buildings which were still to be occupied but probably wouldn't be by the time our set left the school.

She disappeared behind a small wall as she seemed to bend down. I started deviating from where I initially had in mind as I headed to the building she was in to enquire about Alya.

Less than six foot away I finally saw her. I was about to speak when I took notice of the person next to her. It was Alya basically sitting on the floor with her back resting on the wall.

I saw Alesscia's phone dangling from her hand on the verge of falling as she stared at the phone. Her face was stained with tears. Alesscia seemed too concerned about her friend to worry about the fact that her expensive phone would soon be destroyed.

She kept asking Alya who seemed lost in a trance if she was okay. I stared at Alya one more time and my heart broke for the girl.
