Silk and Steel: Forbidden Desires Chapter 18

Bella led Reid to one of the empty guest rooms. The door closed with a soft click behind them, and the sudden silence in the room, after they had withdrawn from the noise and chatter of the party, made Bella's heart skip a beat. She turned to face Reid, her heart pounding with nervous anticipation. In the dimly lit room, their eyes locked, and Bella felt a surge of emotions, making her breath catch.

Reid, ever cold, composed and enigmatic, looked at her with a curiosity that mirrored her own. For a moment, they stood there in silence, the air between them thick with unspoken words. Bella knew that she couldn't delay any longer, and it was time to share her feelings with him, no matter the outcome.

Taking a deep breath, she finally broke the silence. "Reid," she began, her voice trembling ever so slightly, "there's something I need to tell you, something I've been holding back for a long time."

Reid's expression remained unreadable, but he nodded for her to continue, urging her to speak her mind.

Bella continued, her words carefully chosen, "I've had feelings for you for a long time, more than just a simple crush. It's... love, Reid. I'm in love with you."

The room seemed to hold its breath as Bella's confession hung in the air. She couldn't read Reid's reaction, but she had finally shared her most profound secret with him, and the weight of it lifted from her shoulders.

After Bella's heartfelt confession, there were a few moments of silence that hung heavily in the room. For those brief, agonizing seconds, Reid didn't react at all, leaving Bella in an unbearable state of uncertainty. Then, to her bewilderment, he started laughing, a deep and hearty laughter that echoed in the quiet room.

Bella stood there, frozen in place, her heart sinking with every laugh that escaped Reid's lips. The look of confusion and pain on her face was undeniable, and it was as if she had just bared her soul to a stranger rather than the man she had admired and cared for so many years.

As Reid's laughter subsided, he cleared his throat, still wearing an amused smile. He looked at Bella and said, "Bella, I've noticed your crush for a while. But you have to understand, it's just that—a childhood crush. I'm older, and I see you as the sweet girl you've always been. You're my best friend’s daughter, Bella. Hell and I can be old enough to be your father. You are just at the beginning of your life and what you think you feel for me is just an illusion. You don’t really love me."

The words stung like a thousand knives, and Bella's eyes welled up with tears as the harsh reality of Reid's feelings settled in. It was clear to her that her love was unrequited, he was not taking her seriously and the laughter that had come from the man she had longed for had crushed her heart.

Bella forced a small, trembling smile, trying to hide the pain. "I understand," she managed to say, though the ache in her chest made it hard to speak.

With tears in her eyes, Bella turned back to Reid, her voice quivering with raw emotion. "But, Reid, you're wrong. It's not just a childish crush. I love you. I've loved you for years, and I know what I feel. I know it might seem unrealistic to you, but it's real to me."

Reid met her gaze, his expression hardening. "Bella, you don't love me. You love the image, the illusion of me that you've created in your mind. But that's not who I am in reality. You don't know the real me. What you have is a romanticized version, a fantasy, a lie."

Bella's face contorted with a mixture of hurt and anger.

"You're wrong, Reid. I've seen the real you, the glimpses of kindness, the moments of vulnerability, even if you try to hide them. I love the person you are beneath that façade."

Reid's features remained unyielding. "Bella, I don't want to hurt you, but you're idealizing me. You deserve someone who loves you for who you are, not some fantasy version of me. I can't be that person for you. Go and find someone your own age, enjoy your life and forget these feelings, forget me. I am not the man for you, and you are definitely not the woman for me."

The weight of his words pressed on Bella's heart, and she felt a deep sense of despair. It was clear that Reid would not see her love for him as genuine, no matter what she said. She turned away from him, unable to bear the pain in her chest any longer. She left the room, feeling a sense of emptiness she had never experienced before.

Bella couldn't contain her emotions any longer. The weight of Reid's rejection and his disbelief in her feelings overwhelmed her. She rushed to her room, slamming the door behind her, and crumbled onto her bed. Tears streamed down her face, and her sobs wracked her body.

In the solitude of her room, she let her emotions pour out. Her heartache and pain seemed unbearable, and her dreams of being with Reid shattered into a thousand pieces. She felt the sting of humiliation and regret for ever confessing her love to him. It was a deep and visceral pain she had never experienced before.

Minutes turned into hours as Bella wept, letting her emotions flow freely. She knew she had to gather herself eventually, but for now, she allowed herself this moment of raw despair. Her heartache was a testament to the depth of her feelings for Reid, even if he couldn't understand or reciprocate them.

As the tears finally subsided, she knew that moving on from this would be an uphill battle, but she was determined to heal and find a way to mend her broken heart.

After Bella rushed out of the room in tears, Reid's face fell, and his demeanour shifted. He closed his eyes and let out a deep, heavy sigh, leaning against the door he had locked moments earlier behind her. His heart raced as he tried to process what had just transpired.

Reid knew he had just done one of the most difficult things he'd ever had to do. Since Bella had spent her vacation on the Greek island with her family, her presence had persistently lingered in his thoughts and invaded his fantasies. Initially, he had brushed it off as a passing infatuation, but tonight, when he saw her in that burgundy dress, it stirred something deep within him that he couldn't easily dismiss.

She stood out not because she had chosen the most provocative outfit to draw attention, but quite the opposite. Bella had opted for a classic, tasteful burgundy dress that radiated elegance and sophistication, and it was this choice that drove him to distraction.

Her sparkling eyes caught the light, shimmering with intelligence and warmth. Her lips, just a hint of a rosy flush, had an understated allure that left him entranced. Her fair, unadorned skin seemed to glow in the soft ambiance of the room. Every graceful move she made was like a siren's call, pulling him further into her magnetic presence.

Reid couldn't help but feel that Bella was not just beautiful; she was a woman of refined taste and class. Her appearance reflected her understated yet undeniable allure, and it was precisely this quality that had haunted his thoughts since the day he realised that she stirred his body and soul.

When he was next to her, his heart skipped a beat and his blood rushed towards his lower extremities. She was torturing and arousing him like no one before.

He knew that the age difference between them was significant, and Bella was his best friend’s daughter. Plus, she was pure, light, untouched by the evils of this world, while he was the total opposite. He couldn't deny the undeniable attraction he felt, but he also knew he couldn't allow it to go any further. His decision to reject her confession had been an attempt to save both of them from a potential mess, even if it had been excruciatingly painful to do so, as the devil on his shoulder pushed him to give in and surrender to this temptation.

Reid knew he couldn't let his feelings get the best of him. He took a few moments to compose himself, knowing he would have to rejoin the party soon, and maybe he would order another escort to fuck in order to release his pent-up frustration. Deep down, he couldn't shake the feeling that he had just made a colossal mistake, but he couldn't risk damaging the bond between their families or leading Bella on with no real future. He was darkness, evil, cold and Bella had no place in his life.

The weight of his decision hung heavy on his shoulders as he braced himself for the rest of the evening, hoping he could bury his emotions and carry on as if nothing had happened.
