Silk and Steel: Forbidden Desires Chapter 19

Bella's phone rang the next day, the familiar tune of Lily's ringtone filling the room. She glanced at her phone, her swollen eyes feeling heavy. She knew she had to talk to her best friend, but her voice was still raw from all the crying the night before. Bella couldn't find it in herself to answer just yet. She simply let the call go to voicemail, not having the strength to explain her emotions.

After a few minutes, her phone pinged with a new message. It was from Lily. Bella picked up her phone to see what her best friend had to say.

The message simply read, "Are you okay?" Bella stared at those words for a moment.

She wasn't sure how to respond. "Okay" felt like a distant and unattainable concept right now. She finally managed to type out a response, her fingers shaking, "Not okay."

Lily replied almost instantly, "I'm on my way." Bella knew her friend would come running to her side, as she always did in times of need. She didn't respond to Lily's message but was grateful for the unwavering support she knew she would receive.

Bella had no idea how to navigate the overwhelming emotions that had taken over her since her confession to Reid. She had poured her heart out to him, and his response had left her in a state of confusion, sadness, and despair. Lily's presence would bring comfort, understanding, and perhaps some guidance in this turbulent time. Bella desperately longed for someone who could help her make sense of her feelings and her future.

After less than an hour, there was a soft knock on Bella's door. She contemplated whether to answer or not, still feeling fragile from the emotional turmoil of the previous night. However, when she recognized Lily's voice outside the door, her heart warmed, and she replied weakly, "Come in."

The door creaked open, and Lily entered the room, her concerned eyes fixed on Bella. She took in the sight of her best friend sitting on the edge of the bed, her eyes red and puffy from crying. Without a word, Lily approached Bella and pulled her into a comforting embrace.

Bella clung to Lily, feeling the warmth of her friend's presence enveloping her like a protective shield. She didn't need to explain anything just yet; Lily understood her pain and confusion. In that silent moment, Bella found comfort and solace.

They remained that way for a while, Lily holding Bella gently, their unspoken bond providing more support than any words could. Bella was grateful to have a friend who could offer such understanding without the need for explanations. The tears that she'd been holding back began to flow again, but this time it was a cathartic release.

Eventually, Bella managed to choke out, "I told him, Lily."

Bella's voice quivered as she continued, "I told Reid that I love him. But... he laughed, Lily. He said it's just a childhood crush."

Lily's expression shifted from concern to anger on Bella's behalf. "What? Bella, that's cruel. How could he dismiss your feelings like that?"

Tears welled up in Bella's eyes once more, and she shrugged helplessly. "I don't know, Lily. It was like he couldn't even take me seriously. I feel so foolish and rejected."

Lily tightened her embrace and whispered, "You are not foolish, Bella. It takes a lot of courage to confess your feelings. Reid should have been more understanding."

Bella let herself cry again, finding solace in her friend's understanding presence.

After a while, Lily gently took Bella by the hand and guided her towards the en suite bathroom. She gave Bella a reassuring smile and said, "I think it's time for a shower and to put yourself together. I'll go hunt for some snacks while you freshen up."

Bella nodded weakly, appreciating her friend's concern. Lily was right; perhaps a shower and some time alone would help her regain her composure. She watched as Lily left the room, the door closing softly behind her.

Alone in the bathroom, Bella turned on the shower and waited for the water to reach the right temperature. She undressed slowly, still reeling from the emotional rollercoaster of the past night. The hot water cascading over her felt soothing, like a gentle touch to her weary soul.

Under the warm stream, Bella let her tears mingle with the water, letting the sadness and frustration wash away. She lathered up with her favourite shower gel, the familiar scent providing a touch of comfort. With each pass of the soap, she was slowly but surely piecing herself back together.

As she stepped out of the shower, she wrapped herself in a fluffy towel and looked at her reflection in the foggy bathroom mirror. Her eyes were still red, but the traces of tears were slowly fading. Bella took a deep breath, determined to face the day with more strength and resilience.

After getting dressed and applying a minimal amount of makeup to conceal the remnants of her emotional turmoil, Bella stepped out of the bathroom. She found that Lily had returned, bearing a tray of snacks and a sympathetic smile.

Lily patted the bed beside her and said, "Come, let's eat something, Bella."

Bella joined her on the bed, grateful for her friend's presence. As they shared snacks and talked about lighter topics, Bella could feel herself gradually regaining her composure, although the ache in her heart was far from gone.

In the coming days, Bella found solace in spending time with Lupe and Lily. They were her pillars of support, helping her navigate through the tumultuous sea of emotions that had engulfed her life.

However, Bella couldn't help but notice that her parents seemed to treat her the same way as before. They were engrossed in their usual routine, showing no visible effort to spend more time with her or inquire about her well-being, despite now living most of her time away while studying. This lack of reaction from their side weighed heavily on Bella's heart.

It seemed as though her parents were preoccupied with their social obligations and their luxurious lifestyle, leaving Bella feeling like an afterthought. The disappointment and longing she had felt for more affection and attention from them grew stronger with each passing day.

She yearned for her parents to show some genuine concern, especially now when her emotions were in turmoil. Their seeming indifference added to her pain, and she couldn't help but question the depth of their love for her. Bella was coming to terms with the fact that her parents might never be the affectionate and doting figures she had wished for.

The day of Bella's trip back to California finally arrived, and she couldn't help but feel a sense of emptiness and disappointment as her parents were once again absent, this time for the goodbye. She left home with Lupe and headed for the airport, feeling like an afterthought in her own family.

The flight back to California was different this time; they travelled first class instead of the private jet. Despite the comfortable surroundings, Bella's heart was still heavy with the unresolved emotions and unanswered questions that lingered from her time at home.

Once they arrived back at their flat, Lily, always the voice of optimism and support, took Bella's hand and said, "It's time for a new chapter, my friend. Let's mend your heart."

Bella knew she could count on Lily to be there for her, and as they stood in their California home, she felt a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, the next chapter in her life would bring some of the healing she so desperately needed.

In the following weeks, which quickly turned into months, Bella threw herself into her studies and writing with even more intensity. Her secret project was her solace, and she poured her heart and soul into it.

Lily, ever the supportive friend, took her role seriously, trying to find ways to mend her heart and set her up on some blind dates to help her move on, but despite her best efforts, Bella couldn't find even a glimmer of desire or attraction in her heart.

The blind dates came and went, and while Bella appreciated Lily's intentions, it was evident that her heart wasn't ready to move on from the deep emotions she had for Reid.

With each uneventful date, Bella became more and more convinced that her feelings for Reid were not something she could simply cast aside. They lingered, stubbornly refusing to fade, and it left her with a sense of melancholy and longing that seemed impossible to shake.

Bella couldn't help but find a bitter irony in her situation. Perhaps, deep down, she had grown accustomed to the pain, even found some twisted comfort in it. It was as though her heart had become entangled in a web of longing and heartache, and she was both the captive and the captor, unable to break free from the cycle of unrequited love. She laughed at herself, wondering if she had developed a masochistic streak, finding solace in the suffering.
