He had driven by himself from the office, he had no idea where she had gone to but it was not difficult finding her, her scent was still strong as it had not been long she left since she left the building. He had traced her scent to the Milgrave park and was now standing beside his parked car. He looked around briefly, sniffing the air and trying to find which direction had her scent more concentrated.
He had only walked around the park for less than five minutes before he found her, her red hair stood out from the others in the park. She sat on a bench and was speaking freely with a man beside her, whom he guessed was the reason she had taken the day off. He frowned, and doubled his steps as he approached them from behind.
“Donna!” his voice came out more sharply and louder than he had intended, and he saw that it had made her flinch, and her head immediately spun to him.
Her lips parted, and her face was the exact reflection of surprise, she stood up slowly as he walked around the bench to stand in front of her, paying no attention to the man who had now stood up as well.
“Keith?” she said without thinking. His eyebrow peaked when she called his name, it was the first time he had heard his name from her lips, and not the usual “Mr Preston”, somehow he liked the sound of it from her.
“How did you find me here?” she asked softly. “How did you know to look for me here?”
Keith frowned and ignored her questions, just as he had ignored the man. “Your car,” he spoke. ”What happened to it?”
Her expression changed from surprise to confusion, had he come all the way here just to ask her what had happened to her car? “It got damaged, I told you about it.”
“How?”
Donna stole a quick glance at Wayne and then back to Keith, confused as to why he would be asking her these questions now, and not when she had first told him about it. “It just stopped suddenly, I don’t know why.” she answered honestly.
“Okay, and nothing else happened? You just found your way home?”
She nodded her head in response. “Well, yes, kinda.”
“Stop lying to me Donna!” he yelled out suddenly and she jumped in fright, unconsciously moving closer to Wayne who held out his hand towards her, one hand came to rest on her lower back, and the other held her lower arm. He looked at Keith and frowned deeply, he made to step in between the two to protect Donna but she placed a hand on his and squeezed a little so he remained in place.
She placed a hand on Wayne’s for comfort. Keith noticed and frowned, he gritted his teeth and wanted to yank her away from him. He was angry at Donna and was only getting angrier.
“Who are you trying to protect and why?!”
“I’m not…” her voice shook and she swallowed. “I’m not protecting anyone, I’m telling the truth Keith, I don’t know how the car broke down, it just did.”
“You’re lying to me...” He took a step forward with a finger pointed in her face. “…and you know it, it’s not about how the car broke down, Donna, why are you trying to protect Laura? What does she have on you? Did she threaten you to keep quite about this?”
Donna blinked, how did he know? “Laura? She… em…” she looked away from him unable to maintain eye contact.
Keith seethed and turned away from her, he had one hand planted firmly on his waist and the other ran through his hair, he felt the anger course through his entire being and he wanted to yell at Donna for being so stupid! He needed to release, he felt the urge to break something, to punch something, sometimes she was as tough as he needed her to be, and then at other times she came off as a weakling.
“Fuck!” he cursed under his breath.
“You’re coming back to the office with me right now!” he said and grabbed her by the wrist and made to pull her away with him. She opened her mouth to protest but Wayne had already grabbed Keith by the arm as well to stop him from taking her away.
Keith turned in anger and his eyes came to rest on Wayne’s hand on his arm. His gaze shot up to the man’s face and he let out a low growl unconsciously, he wanted to reach out and grab the man’s hand, twist it off of him until his bones snapped and broke but there were so many things to consider. One was the fact that Donna would be mortified, and right now, scaring her further was one thing he wanted to avoid, second,was the fact that they were in a public park, and it was daytime, third, no human could break another man’s hand and snap off the bones in a grip with one hand.
Donna feared that things might go out of hand so with her free hand she tried to remove Wayne’s hand from Keith’s arm. She looked at Wayne and pleaded with him using her eyes and then addressed Keith as she spoke. “I’ll come to the office but first I just need to…”
“You don’t need to do anything else here!” Keith thundered, his grip on her wrist tightened and she winced. He began to pull her away but she called out to him desperately.
“Mr Preston, please!” but he would not listen, Donna tried not to show that she was struggling to get away from him because she did not want them to be a thing of attention for the others at the park. She grabbed a hold of his arm and tried to pull. “Keith!”
But nothing she said got to Keith, nothing she said would make him stop, not until someone ran up to them, stopping right in front of Keith. “Mummy! Are we leaving?”
