I stood up from my desk and stretched my tired muscles. It was already dark outside, and I couldn't wait to change my clothes and head home. As I made my way to the staff room, and head home. I heard a strange noise coming from the hallway, but I don't pay attention to it and continued on my way.
As I approached my room, I heard the noise again, but this time it sounded louder and more urgent. I paused for a moment, but my fatigue got the better of me, and I decided to ignore it and go straight to bed.
As soon as my head hit the pillow, I was fast asleep. I didn't even remember falling asleep until my alarm woke me up the next morning. I got dressed for work and stepped outside, but I was immediately stopped by Alpha Blake.
"What did you mean when you told me to go and meet my half-human mate yesterday morning?" he asked.
I looked at him, "what are you talking about? I never said that."
Alpha Blake narrowed his eyes. "Don't play dumb with me. You know exactly what I'm talking about."
I rolled my eyes. "Well, what about if you asked Leah that question?"
I pushed Blake aside and started walking away, but he ran after me. "What's going on, Sophia? Tell me the truth."
But as he spoke, something else caught my attention. I saw a scratch on Miranda's left hand, and I knew it was fresh. She tried to hide it when she noticed me looking, but it was too late.
"What happened to your hand, Miranda?" I asked her.
Blake saw the scratch and was stunned. He immediately had a flashback about what happened last night. Someone had tried to drop a bouquet of black roses at my front door, and Blake had attacked the person because he believed they were from the Black Bird Wolves pack. The person had been wearing a mask, so Blake hadn't been able to see their face, but he had managed to scratch their hand before they could escape.
Miranda dragged my wrist as we quickly entered the cab, immediately Blake snapped out of his thoughts. "What's going on Miranda? Stop the cab!" I spat as the cab man stopped.
I stepped out of the cab, and walked back to Blake, and he tell me to be careful because it's seems evil is following me. "What do you mean by that?" I asked him.
Blake explained to me, what happened last night. I looked at him, trying to make sense of everything. "Someone tried to deliver a message to me last night. And you think they might be trying to send a warning?"
Blake's face darkened. "We need to find out who it was and put a stop to it." Blake was looking at Miranda, who was standing beside the cab and refuse to pay attention to us.
I nodded in agreement, as I walked back to the cab. He drove Miranda and I to the coffee shop, I had a feeling that things were about to get a lot more complicated, but I was determined to get to the bottom of it.
Miranda asked me if I trust Blake, after what he did to me. I told her that I don't, but we lived in the same condo so I can't avoid him. Miranda signs and tell me to beware of Blake, and I shouldn't forget what he did to me, and I am going through all the humiliation because of him.
I couldn't concentrate on my conversation with Miranda, and my mind kept wandering back to the scratch on Miranda's hand and the incident with the black roses.
Suddenly, my phone rang, interrupting my thoughts. It was Blake.
"Sophia, we need to talk," he said urgently.
"What is it?" I asked, trying to keep my tone neutral.
"I think I know who sent those black roses. It was someone from the Black Bird Wolves pack," he replied.
My heart sank. "Do you have any proof?"
"Not yet, but I have a lead. Meet me at the park in an hour," he said before hanging up.
I sighed and Miranda asked what happened. I told her Blake said, he has a lead about the person that has been dropping the black roses. Miranda frown and tell me that, Blake is just trying to distract me, and it's better I focus on my work because I just start.
"Okay," I replied Miranda and stepped out from the cab, wave off the thought from my head and trying to focus on my new job.
As soon as I stepped inside the coffee shop, my eyes landed on Maria. She was standing near the counter, looking at her watch with a stern expression on her face. "I'm sorry, Maria," I said, rushing over to her. "I got held up in traffic. I'll go change into my uniform right away."
Maria nodded curtly, her lips pressed into a thin line. I knew I was in trouble for being late, but I didn't expect what came next. As I was attending to a customer, I heard a loud voice behind me. "Excuse me, miss! Could you come over here, please?"
I turned around to see who it was, and my heart sank when I saw Derick standing there. Derick was my former boss at Mondragon's company, and he had always been a difficult person to work with. The tray I was holding slipped from my hands, and a mug shattered on the ground, drawing everyone's attention.
"Sorry, sorry!" I said, rushing to pick up the broken pieces. Maria was furious. "What is going on here?" she demanded. "Why did you drop that mug?"
"I'm sorry, Maria," I said, feeling embarrassed. "I was just surprised to see Derick here."
"Who is he?" Maria asked, her eyes narrowing.
"He's my former boss," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "I'll go attend to him right away."
Maria hesitated for a moment, but then she nodded. "Fine. Go and serve him. But be careful this time!"
I made my way over to Derick's table, feeling a knot in my stomach. "Hello, Derick," I said, trying to sound professional. "What can I get for you today?"
Derick looked me up and down, a smirk on his face. "Well, well, well," he said. "If it isn't my former employee. I see you've traded in your suit for a coffee uniform."
I forced a smile. "Yes, I'm working here now. What can I get for you?"
"Hot chocolate," he said, leaning back in his chair. "But I want it to be perfect. I don't want any mistakes like that mug you dropped."
I gritted my teeth, but I knew I had to be polite. "Of course, Derick. I'll make sure it's perfect."
As I walked back to the counter to make his hot chocolate, I couldn't help but feel angry and frustrated. Why did he have to come here and make my life difficult? And why did Maria have to be so harsh with me?
But as I poured the steaming milk into the mug, I took a deep breath and reminded myself that this was just a job. I had to be professional and do my best, no matter how difficult the customers were.
Finally, I brought the hot chocolate over to Derick's table, trying to keep a smile on my face. "Here you go, Derick. Enjoy."
He took a sip, then nodded. "Not bad," he said. "But you still have a lot to learn."
I forced myself to stay calm. "Is there anything else I can get for you?"
"No, that's all," he said, waving me away. "But I'll be back soon. And next time, I want to see some improvement."
I gritted my teeth as I walked back to the counter, feeling the weight of his words on my shoulders. But I knew I had to push through and do my best. After all, I had a job to do.
It is not up to ten minutes, Derick asked me to serve him another coffee, at this time I knew he was up to something. I was trembling with fear and nervousness as I served Derick another hot chocolate.
Memories of how he treated me at Mondragon's company came flooding back and I couldn't help but wonder why he was here. As I handed him his drink, he smirked and asked me if I enjoyed being fired. I gritted my teeth and told him that I did not appreciate his behavior towards me at work and that it was unfair to treat someone that way just because they don't belong to any pack.
Derick laughed and said that in the werewolf world, only the strong survive and that I was weak for not being able to handle the pressure. He then went on to say that he knew about the black bird wolves danger in my bag and that Mia was the one who put it there. My heart dropped as I realized that Mia was responsible for my termination at Mondragon's company.
Before I could say anything, Derick got up and left the coffee shop, leaving me in shock and anger. Maria came up to me and asked me what happened, but I couldn't bring myself to tell her. I went to the back room and took a moment to calm down and process everything that had just happened. I couldn't believe that Mia would go to such lengths just to get rid of me.
As I took deep breaths to calm myself, I knew that I had to find a way to get back at Mia and make her pay for what she did. But for now, I needed to focus on my job and try to stay out of trouble. I went back to work, determined to make the best of my new job and start a new chapter in my life.
