Unsavory Redemption Chapter 29

"Some mistakes are irredeemable."

She said it more to herself in a gloomy voice. I wanted to say something to comfort her and this time I did.

"But you cannot destroy your future because of your past." She looked at me as she snickered.

"What's with that sudden change? If you want to fix our relationship then let me tell you there's no relation between us, the only emotion present between us is hatred."

I swallowed the bitterness of her words inside me and replied in a cold voice, "I know. You don't have to tell me."

She then nodded. I went to our room.

“Do I have to dress up?” She asked bitterly, checking her dress.

“No, you look fine.” I replied coldly as I freshened myself as we went to have dinner.

The dinner was silent. The sound of soft music in the background somehow eased the tension in the air a little but Rebecca.

As always unaffected by anything, continued to eat her food.

I wanted to know her, even though I knew a lot about her, her education, her remarkable skills.

"Rebecca." I called her.

She hummed in response and I asked, "What made you leave your skills behind?"

She stopped eating and looked at me with her mystifying gaze. She kept looking at me for about a minute without uttering another word.

“Why?” My voice softened further.

She soon regained her posture and cleared her throat and said, "They are a curse."

Her voice was vague and it felt like she barely managed to speak.

"Everything has their advantages and disadvantages." I told her.

"Mr Knight, sometimes even advantages might be fatal." Her words were wise and held in-depth feelings I want to explore.

"And what about the heart which hurts not only itself but the ones around it too?" I asked.

"What if I die before your revenge?" She asked And I was left speechless. Her words left me at a loss for words.

My heart clenched as I said faintly, "Answer my question first."

"It is my answer." I looked at her in disbelief as she continued.

"Think about your revenge." I couldn't speak. I felt like crushing under the weight of her words.

My revenge hurt not only me but the ones around me.

“The web of resentment slowly consumes our souls.” She chuckled seductively.

She talks in such a twisted manner that now I even began to question myself more. She made me feel insecure.

An empty smile formed on my lips as I said, "In that sense, we are on the same page."

She raised an eyebrow at me as her lips curved upward from one corner but not in mockingly but in amusement as if she found my words funny.

"We can never be on the same page Mr Knight... as long as I am alive." She said, staring intently at me.

A wave of nostalgia and heartbreak flashed in her eyes.

"Then whose life have you taken?" I asked.

Now both her lips curved upward as a sad smile formed on her lips and she replied in a whisper, "Mine."

My eyes widened when I heard it as millions of questions rushed in my mind and I couldn't apprehend her words.

“R-Rebecca?” I gulped before gathering my further words.

They held such riddles in them that perceived them seemed almost impossible.

"Did you tried to attempt suicide?" I asked hesitantly and my heart began to beat faster in the fear of hearing yes.

She let out a laugh and lowered her head and remained silent.

“How trivial…”

My heart felt like it stopped as the world around me ceased to exist and a deadly feeling of dread filled me up.

She laughed scornfully as she narrowed her eyes at me in contempt.

“Look at your face.” She put her elbow on the table and rested her chin on her palm while smiling at me. I don't know why but I found the sound of her laugh melodious.

She gave me a smug look and asked in the same mocking tone I used on her, "Ah, Tell me what are your intentions, my dearest husband?"

She exhaled and leaned back and continued, "Are you looking for new ways other than intimacy to break my facades?”

I couldn’t speak, her words were hurting me terribly; unintentionally.

“Hmm? Tell me, what can an animal like you do other than that? Want to make a show of my past or perhaps want me to bend my knees before you and beg for mercy?"

She finished her sentence with a dire voice and rolled her eyes at me.

“It’s hubris of you to try.” She shrugged.

If it was any other day, I would have replied to her with a ridiculed statement but right now, her words broke my heart but in a sense she is right, what have I ever done for her?

“Hmm..” I lowered my gaze and remained silent.

I just want to know you. Please don't push me away.

I closed my eyes as I swallowed hard. My heart felt heavy as I stared at my food devoid.

“It’s not worth it, Mr Knight. You will not find anything.” She whispered coldly, the ruthless smile on her lips broke my heart.

“Why..?” I breathed out, forcing myself to speak.

“What do you hope to find in nothingness?” She asked, arching one eyebrow.

“Why did you do this to yourself?” I asked, curling my hands in a tight fist.

“Those who don't have their own shadow with them, cannot expect others to be present.” She breathed out, shaking her head.

How can this be monotonous to you?

“So leave it, I bet Marianne must have told you. She is stupid anyways, spouts nonsense.” She muttered, taking a bite of her food.

“Byron should seal her lips.” She made a sour face.

I don’t want to talk about her, talk to me about you. Tell me about you, I want you…

None of us said another word after that as we ate our food in silence and went home.
