"So I spoke with Nate concerning what we discussed about the trial date and he told me the trial will be held in two weeks. On the last day of the month, which is the 30th."
"In two weeks? Isn't that too far?" I ask with displeasure
"Will they be able to prepone the date if I request it? I don't want this to drag on for too long. I want to be done with it as soon as possible so I can focus on more important issues"
They don't usually do that but because of whatever lies Evelyn might have fed them with. I'm sure they will make an exception for you if you request it since they also can't wait to take the Alpha position away from you and give it to Justin. But I don't advise you to do that. It's the normal procedure to give two weeks so your lawyer will be able to gather evidence for the trial."
"A lawyer? Is that necessary? Can't I just go there on the said date with my team and tell them you're not dead?"
"No, you cannot! I don't trust both of you and your attitudes towards the elders. Evelyn has fed them with so many lies and hateful words about you and both of your attitudes towards them are not helping matters. I don't want them to detest you more than they already have. You should speak with Nate concerning this, he's my lawyer and..."
"Oh, Alpha Nate is a lawyer?" Eric interrupts with surprise
"Yeah... He used to practice in court and I bet he still got the juice in him. Anyway, I already informed him about it and he has agreed to represent you. He'll call you, maybe tomorrow.
"Okay, thanks Pops"
"Yeah. So what day did your Elders schedule your inauguration for?" He asks.
Eric and I look at each other before we burst out in laughter at the same time
"Why? Did I say something funny?"
"Inauguration you say?" Eric says while still laughing
"Dad, your Elders didn't even call to congratulate me. What made you think there would be an inauguration? I will inaugurate myself when I'm ready. I don't need them.''
"Yeah, we don't need them," Eric says with no trace of amusement on his face this time.
"They are useless! When the motion to impeach their Alpha was raised in the Council, not only did they not oppose it, but they didn't call to warn us. That alone goes a long way to show how much hatred they have for Thor, Uncle!
And for what exactly? How do you hate someone you have never had any dealings with just because of the rumors you heard about him?"
Eric's outburst takes me by surprise. He hardly gets angry but whenever he does, he doesn't easily get pacified
My Dad exhaled loudly
"Then you'll have to prove yourself to them..."
"No, Dad! I don't have to prove anything to them. Let them continue with that same energy. They will find out the truth on the day of the trial."
"Okay... But please don't be too hard on them. Their mind has been poisoned towards you. They believe you're the bad guy while Evelyn and Justin are the angels. Remember, they've lived in the same pack with the mother and son for years. The pack's yours now. You're the Alpha so do whatever you feel is right with it but with caution."
"Yeah sure, thanks, Pops"
"Okay. The doctor is here. It's time for me to take my meds. Eric, are we still on for tonight?"
"Yes, we are, Uncle. I'll call you."
"What other business do you guys have with each other that I can't hear about," I still ask even though I know it must be because of my mate and the memory I locked away.
Eric opens his mouth to reply but I interrupt him.
"You don't have to lie. I know what you want to talk about. I mean what could be so secretive other than the issue surrounding my mate and my memory?"
"Was that a question or you're just making a statement?" He asks, frowning at me. "Well, since you said you already know what I want to talk about then I guess there's no need for me to answer right?"
"Asshole..." I said and glowered at him. The fool already knew I was fishing for information and immediately put an end to it before my dad was able to answer my question.
"Dick head..." He replies to me with his usual annoying grin
"Okay, that's enough for both of you! I have to go. The healer is waiting. I'll talk to you both tomorrow, my dad says and ends the call from his side.
"Why didn't you tell him about the security breach and the executive's behavior?" Eric asks immediately after the call ended
"Because he has retired and deserves to rest. The pack is not his problem anymore, it's mine. Ours. You and I, the Alpha and Beta." I reply and he smiles with a nod of his head
"So what do you have in mind?" He asked "I have a temporary solution for our security problem but I'm not sure if you'll like it. It's a solution but it has its own risk, you know..."
"I know what you're thinking... Mercenaries." I guessed and he nods with a smile.
"Yeah," I say, also nodding. What risk do you think would be involved in hiring them?"
"We don't know them individually? We don't know if they're mentally stable. There's no way for us to tell how well they keep the balance between their human and beast nature. We don't want to let loose a mentally Imbalanced wolf in the pack you know..."
"A mentally imbalanced wolf like me, hmm?" I ask with a raised eyebrow, feigning annoyance.
"Yeah, something like that." He replies and we both laugh. Even though we laughed about what he said, I know he's right. A military shifter battling with post-traumatic stress disorder is borderline feral and can be triggered by any little provocation.
"I understand your fear but we don't have a choice considering the circumstances. We'll contact only the best private military company. And even at that, we can't be too sure, you know. Since we can't do a personal interview for each soldier, the best thing to do is not to allow them to work independently. We'll divide them into groups and each group will be led by a member of the team. That way we'll be sure we have our eyes on everything they will be doing."
"Yeah... That's a very good idea."
A knock sounded on my door then. I know it's Ella. I can smell her essence through the door.
"Come inside, Ella," I answered and the door opened.
"Alpha, one of the executives is here" she announces.
