The Rejected Mate Chapter 23

Derick looked at me skeptically, his piercing blue eyes scrutinizing my every move. "How can Miranda help you get a job here?" he asked.

I hesitated for a moment before answering. "I don't know," I said, shrugging my shoulders. "I just thought she might know someone who knows the owner of the shop."

Derick scoffed. "Miranda is a mere human forbidden child," he said. "She has no power among the werewolves. And how could she even have such connection?"

I had no answer for him. I had hoped that Miranda could have somehow pull some strings that get that job at the luxurious coffee shop owned by a mysterious werewolf, but now it seemed like a far-fetched idea.

Derick seemed to sense my disappointment. "You need to slow down around Miranda," he said. "You can work for me."

I looked at him skeptically. "What would I be doing?" I asked.

"That remains to be seen," Derick said cryptically. "But if you agree to work for me, I'll make sure my pack will protect you."

I thought about it for a moment. I had no other options, and the thought of having no idea what has happened to my parents, was running through my mind. But there was something about Derick that made me uneasy. I haven't forgotten how he treated me.

"Before I agree to work for you," I said, "I need your help, and it's urgent."

Derick raised an eyebrow. "What kind of help?"

"My parents' territory in New York was attacked by the black bird wolves pack," I explained. "I don't know if they're still alive, and I need to find out."

Derick's expression softened. "I see," he said. "That's why you need to make sure, you don't get sack at that coffee shop, at all cost."

I nodded. "If the black bird wolves own the coffee shop, that means, I need to be careful around Miranda."

Derick nodded in agreement. "I'll help you," he said. "But you have to agree to work for me first."

I hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Okay," I said. "I'll work for you."

"Good," Derick said, a faint smile playing at the corners of his lips. "Go home for now. I'll send you a text with your first task."

I nodded and turned to leave, wondering what I had just gotten myself into. I only want to help my parents and protect myself, not to get caught in the middle of packs war.

But I turned, and asked Derick that why did he do that to Leah? "That's not the issue now, you need to save your parents first, according to you. Besides, I don't regret doing that!" Derick replied looking straight into my eye from where he is sitting.

"She was carrying a baby, and the baby is gone because of what you did! If I had known I wouldn't have gave you the address."

"Come on, Sophia, I also lost a close friend and good follower because of Blake! So if I were you, I will face the problem at hand. And forget about those that betrayed me. Please close the door behind you." Derick focus on his computer and I walked out of his office.

I was about existing the company, when I heard a familiar voice called my name. I turned back and saw Miranda, my heart sank as she wave me and walked closer to me. "Hey Sophia, what are you doing here?"

"Huh! h-m-mm, I ca-me here to see y--ou. Your line, is not connecting," I said sluttering.

"Oh, sorry, tell me, why did you want to see me?" I was quiet for a while, as Miranda asked this question because I don't know the lies to tell her. But suddenly, something flash into my mind.

"Actually, it's Leah, she miscarriage," I tried composing myself.

Miranda's expression turned serious as I told her about Leah's miscarriage. "Oh my God, that's terrible," she said. "Is Leah okay? And you never told me she was pregnant, but that's not the issue. Is she fine?"

I shrugged my shoulders, trying to appear nonchalant. "I don't know," I said. "I haven't spoken to her since it happened."

Miranda looked at me skeptically. "Is there something else you're not telling me?" she asked.

I hesitated for a moment before deciding to pull up something that might make her not to suspect my visit to the company. "It's about Derick," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "He's the one that attacked Leah."

Miranda's eyes widened in shock. "What?" she exclaimed. "How do you know? And why would he do something like that?"

"I gave him Blake's address," I said. "But trust me, I don't know he was going to harm anybody."

Miranda looked at me with concern. "You need to be careful around him," she said. "He's dangerous. He might just want to be using you."

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief that Miranda believed me. "I know," I said. "That's why I wanted to talk to you. I don't know who to trust anymore."

Miranda placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "You can trust me," she said. "Let's go outside and talk about this."

But I shook my head. "No, I have to go home now," I said. "I'll talk to you later."

With that, I quickly made my way out of the company. As I walked away, I couldn't help but feel that Miranda's eyes were fix on me.

But I had no choice. I couldn't let her find out the truth that I will be working for Derick because I don't trust her.

I made my way to the subway station, my mind racing with thoughts of what my first task for Derick might be. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I had to do whatever it takes to find out if my parents were still alive.

As I sat on the train, I pulled out my phone scrolling through, expecting Derick's text. I had to do whatever it takes to get the answers I needed.

As the train pulled into my stop, I took a deep breath and step out. And made my way to my condo, immediately I entered my room and change into a comfort wear. I got a beep on my phone, it's a message from Derick and it's reads, "find out anything in that coffee shop, that could lead to investigation."

I sighed as I read the message from Derick. It was vague, and I had no idea where to start. But I knew I had to find something if I wanted to keep working for him and hopefully find out what had happened to my parents.
